Modern music isn't awful, but people are.

There has never been so much music being released, in every genre you can imagine and then some, than now; and it's never been easier and more affordable to have access to it. If you're too lazy / not curious enough to take advantage of this, it's your loss.

Complaining about "modern music" as if everything recorded post-2000 could be lumped in one genre definitely makes one look like the "old man yells at cloud" meme.

the beatles had bad voice leading. a lot of musicians thought they were hacks and "awful" back when that was modern.

if you don't like something, you don't need to consume it- right? I always wonder if chefs are the same way - are there culinary forums where people bash mcdonalds all the time? mediocre is always going to be acceptable for the common man. the specialist will always want excellence.

i'm fine with the state of things. I do get bummed out that musicians playing to backing tracks is really a popular standard these days in the youtube generation, but still, i get to play all sorts of fun stuff with all sorts of cool people. I hear so much great new stuff i can't possibly think music is in a bad way in 2019.

Pheobe Bridgers, boygenius, DIIV, Japanese Breakfast, Snail Mail, SASAMI, Hop Along, Bully, Swearin', Mike Krol, Courtney Barnett, Tame Impala, Camp Cope, Cloud Nothings...

These are all fairly new artists/bands who are making incredible music today. I should also include amazing recent albums from veterans like Neko Case, The Breeders, My Bloody Valentine, Swervedriver, Slowdive, and Band of Horses, to name a just a few.

If someone isn't finding good music right now, then they are not really listening.

Just for the heck of it I looked of the top songs of 50 years ago … and a lot of the hit songs back then were lacking in quality and don't hold up well today … so every era produces a few good songs and lots of mediocre songs

I'm old - just turned 55.

I reflexively hate anything popular on the radio, my much younger wife cranks up all the latest music all the time, and I cringe, thinking, "God this music SUCKS! Why can't music be awesome like it used to be??? Waaaah!!!!"

So another old guy at work started listening to a classic rock radio station at his desk, and I have been listening to all the popular classic rock songs that I used to hear all the time in the 70s and 80s.

With almost every song I overhear I think, "God this music SUCKS!"

Turns out most all music sucks, and it sucked in the 70s, 80s, 90s and so on.

The only difference is that radio used to slip in some good deeper cuts once in awhile and many of the hits were better then (generally) but overall the popular music suck factor has remained consistently high for decades.

It's not just "today's music."

It's easy for an old guy like me to forget that nearly all music sucked, still sucks and will suck into the future ("suck into the future" kinda got a nice ring to it).

I am older than you … for me the modern music that I like is alternative … I like music where people actually play instruments and the singers don't use auto-tune
