Yeah, life is too short to cross swords with fools. Someone asked me a while back if there was anyone I "hated", and I couldn't think of a single person. There's a few people dislike, but as you say, I just distance myself from them, so they they quickly become irrelevant to me. Some people like confrontation, I guess (in fact I know a few who thrive on it) - I've never understood that mindset.

Nicely said, and very true. We continually do our own race a disservice by how we treat each other. When it comes to the morals, or even mores of a species, humans continue to rate very lowly indeed - ants rate far better than us. I fear we will never change; a brief study of history seems proof that we're worse now than ever. Morally and ethically, we're actually "devolving" as a race. Most people hate to admit it, but people from the "dark ages" would be appalled at what we've become.

Yeah. The good ole times of yore when education was nonexistent and it's place was taken up by superstition, doctors were essentially butchers that killed their patients more often than saving them because of that very ignorance, war on the European mainland was pretty much constant, women and slaves (human spoils of war) were considered less than human and were personal property to the elite, poverty was the status quo for the majority, and looking forward to dying of starvation, war, highway murder, smallpox, plague, or - quite often - the gallows were soooooo much better circumstances than the the way things are now.

Those people raiding and sacking foreign cities and enslaving the survivors - they had some real moral fiber!

You're just confusing knowledge and technology with progress. Sure, doctors "butchered" their patients, but not out of spite, just out of ignorance of anatomy and disease. Millions still die every year of curable diseases like Malaria, Tuberculosis, Whooping Cough, Syphilis. Throw in HIV, and the plague is nothing in comparison.

Women are still slaves in many parts of the world - in fact they're treated no better than livestock in many regions. Plenty of countries still execute people - women are still stoned to death, men are beheaded, and in some "civilized countries", they're given lethal injections. What's the difference? They're still dead.

There's as many wars now as there have ever been. Think Bosnia, or Rwanda, The Sudan or Uganda (where children are tortured and murdered every day). How about North Korea sanctioning the use of Nuclear weapons? Yeah, we've come a long, long way.

You talk about poverty? Are you serious? Look at much of Africa, Asia, South America - poverty is as bad as it's ever been - in fact in terms of numbers, it's never been as bad, not ever close. Millions die of malnutrition every day.

You should also consider that we continue to destroy the very planet we live on - that is the very antithesis of "enlightenment" (let alone common sense). We're far more violent that in any time in history. In fact much of our "progress" has gone into inventing more efficient ways of killing each other.

What a shame - I was hoping for a half intelligent response at least. I didn't "claim to know what's morally best for all of us". I just pointed out a few facts for comparison's sake. Still, you managed to slip in "rhetoric" and "misanthropy" - nice. I suggest you look up the meanings of words before using them next time. There's plenty of good on-line dictionaries available if you don't have one at home.

Hardly. In the Dark Ages, 99.99% of people got a crappy deal.

Right now a large minority are doing pretty well, another chunk are rising up to join them, and there's still a large number of people doing very badly. There's still people suffering, still work to do, but on average we're doing way, way better.

I called it rhetoric because you are only claiming that things that happened in the dark ages still happen in parts of the world today. That's obvious. I don't see how that makes your point that dark-age Europeans were better than us morally - although it was a pretty good appeal to emotion.

The idea that the world is doomed and modern people are amoral compared to people living centuries before just seems misanthropic to me. Like you loathe everyone for being so.... well..... the way they are instead of like some presumed "better people" from the past. I'm not calling you a misanthrope per se, but just saying the idea seems misanthropic - which brings us around to the theme of this thread - "why do you dislike people?"
