Why PJ, Why Not Precision and Big Split or Soapbar

Ive been pondering a custom build, and looking at the PUPs, visually, a PJ just looks wrong, a nice brawny looking P PUP and a little skinny J. Why not replace the J with a more substantial looking PUP like a Big Split. Are there any cons, or is it just tradition?

Kramer did this some years ago with a double J, and I think some of the Schecter Diamond models have them, as well as the Fender discontinued P deluxe ( ? ).

In particular that Schecter looks like a much more balanced pair (visually). For sure a look I can get behind on a singlecut.

I have a Nordstrand NP5 (reverse) and a Big Split (70's position) in my VJ5. Sounds great. Cuts but fatter than a J, and no hum.

Why? Because something other than a J pickup at the bridge sounds like something other than a J pickup at the bridge. And I want the sound of a J pickup at the bridge. The tone of a passive P and J bridge pickup together just works.

I always wanted a P and soapbar that had seperate coils to give 60s and 70s single coil spacing options. That would be cool.

Personally I like the p/j but if your doing a custom build, do whatever you like. There are no rules.

I like the Jazz sound personally, but I don't play my 1972 as the neck drives me crazy. Less than 1.5" at the nut and round, not flat. I Am seriously considering selling it as it isn't getting played at all.

My favorite year for a J, specifically the early '66 dot/bound/pops version. Would love to own one in Burgundy Mist Metallic, but I can't justify the cost such an example would go for... so I built my own trib in Oly wht.

Yeah, mine is early dots/bind/pops, was burst, I had Mr Dolan refin in black, so now I love the looks, just not playing it
