Why so much Fuzz? School me

So before I started hanging on the internet my effects use was minimal. I hang out here and the emporium and it seems fuzz is a big thing most bass players are into. Why is that? Please explain this too me.

Well... fuzz is a big thing to a lot of us FX heads, cause, ah... it's sounds good to us. For me personally, I like thick, phat knarley harmonic content in my tones. I also like a little hair in the you know where on my girl.

Same reason guitarists use it, it sounds good! And it can fill out the sound alot more.

its a big thing cause getting a good fuzz tone is hard! ... and if you nail a good fuzz set-up, i guess apart from having a really good sound to use in the band, you also have bragging rights among gearheads lol

I the key has to do with harmonic content in the tone...same reason people like tubes in their amps... it's something that is innately satisfying to our brains

I love using fuzz at the peak of a song, or the highest point. Makes for a great uplift, and really melts faces!!!

Really, I think you should just search for threads here that have clips. Then go buy a fuzz you like the sounds of and try it for a while.

Yeah got one I like, and another one in the mail, I just dont see why its such a hot thing with the bass. I am trying to understand. My initial thought was "OK balls to the wall, yup it does that, sounds great, lots of fun, but not incredible useful with the bass, am I missing something?"

There isn't one particular fuzz tone that is "it" for everyone. Fuzz taste is as broad as taste in basses and playing styles. Since there is so many fuzz options, there is a lot of different tones people claim as their signature fuzz. Eventually you will find a taste of fuzz that will hook your soul and you'll be sucked into it.

to the OP: keep in mind there are ALOT of guys on here that play heavy music, or whacked out funk, or weirded out electro, or groovied soul that NEEEEEEEEEED fuzz.

What kind of fuzz does Beasties bass player use?

It's a vintage Superfuzz. Lots of clones out there today (not the Voodoo Lab Superfuzz, which is based on the Jordan Bosstone). It also sounds like they flanged it or he played it through that Leslie cab (I know he doesn't in the video, but there's something else going on on the bass like a Leslie).

Here's a good use of [Invalid or Expired Link Removed], which is related, and as some have already mentioned, is a way to punch beyond some of the warm drive that some people (lots is maybe more accurate) seek with tubes in their amps and compressors, or tube emulators in products like Sansamp.
