Check out the tracks "Open Your Eyes" and "Magic Mountain". Killer grinding fuzz tone, sounds like they ran the bass through a JCM800 or something.

fuzz is taking aggressive bass tone and turning it up a few notches. To me, its like overdrive but with more hair and less low-end loss.

Overdrives are tricky, Ive found that low gain settings work best to keep em from getting tooooo overdrivey... my faves there are the SFT with the drive low, the Fuzzrocious Dark Driving, the Blueberry is pretty neat with some of my basses, and the Aguilar Agro Rackmount is VERY nice on subtler settings... it rules turned balls out tooo

Yeah, I haven't had good luck with em, but then, I haven't tried the SFT, Dark Driving, or Blueberry. From what I can ascertain, these are at the top of the overdrive heap.

My next direction is an aggressive fuzz (hence my presence on this thread). Gonna try out the TFR from Wren and Cuff, sounds amazing!

I agree about overdrives... never really found one that I like to use on it's own. My favorite dirt for dirt's sake pedal is the FEA Dual Band Distortion... it just sounds tasty good!

So before I started hanging on the internet my effects use was minimal. I hang out here and the emporium and it seems fuzz is a big thing most bass players are into. Why is that? Please explain this too me.

Good question. I always preferred a nice clean punchy tone. Occasionally, a little bit of growl but I don't understand the fuzz thing either. Too me, it just makes the song sound muddy.
