Is it nasty around here? I see heaps of pleasantries on a daily basis. There is the occasional disagreement, but it rarely turns to mudslinging or name calling.

Yeah but look what used to happen before Internet forums, a group of people had an argument in 1939 and look how that turned out
But that's exactly it. It's just discourse...about a hobby. No reason to get seriously bothered by anything here, because it's meaningless in the end. If people want to be nasty, let them. You don't have to let it bother you – nobody does. I'd rather have a room full of outlooks and opinions and, yes, attitudes – including those that I wholeheartedly disagree with – and be able to wade through it picking and choosing as I see fit, how, and with whom, to interact, than to have certain opinions and attitudes deemed inappropriate and banned/eliminated. The automatic foul language substitutions here are bad enough. We don't need our "attitudes" adjusted too.
That's generally true. Until you ask something like "Should I put flatwounds on my Jazz?".
You get a couple rubes battling over Chevy vs. Ford, and those Calvin stickers can't generate enough urine.
I try, each and every day... mission accomplished, if I can get a member to spout his/her drink of choice out their nose...

I don't say this sarcastically - I genuinely can't recall seeing a thread turn hostile here. Good-natured ribbing, sure, but never anything outright rude or insulting. This is by far the most consistently pleasant and helpful of the forums I still spend any time on.
Cause some people are just a$$hats. And consistently choose to be that way no matter what. I usually try to just ignore them, take what I want and leave the rest. This is the main reason I stay away from social media these days. Nothing but negativity and "my opinion is only one that matters and it's right and if you don't like it and or agree, you're dumb" going on. I usually frequent threads where I know most people who are there are helpful and not full o kaka when it counts. Tons of great people on here that's for sure. I try to pay attention to those folks.
I choose to ignore the noise when it gets turned up. I love TB and all it offers.
This place is more innocuous, by far, than other sites. We, as a group, have fewer imaginary dragons to slay than inhabitants of guitar, audiophile, art, and automotive forums, who regularly question your familial status, or invoke your ancestor's sexual preferences.
Contentions here seem to self-regulate to a second grade "Oh, yeah?" level.
It's not that responders are trying to be cruel or mean, it's just that, to paraphrase, there are so many people who don't know what they don't know.

My opinion? Growth of the user base was chosen over maintaining the collective knowledge. A lot of long standing members left as new members came in with an often antagonistic attitude. They were allowed to attack and long term members were banned or put on probation if they said anything in return. Now it's more of a passive aggressive innuendo of digs against everyone. All, IMHO.
I must come here at the wrong times or visit the wrong threads.
While it's not high tea at Claridge's, I far more often than not find the exchanges on TB to be pretty darn collegial, good-natured, and helpful. The forum's embrace of newbies merits commendation. Some differences of opinion do escalate, and that's unfortunate to see, but I've no memory of things devolving to the personal or political.

I see them trolling me from time to time, but have realized the best response is no response.
It is surprising how many just like to drop their sardonic wit into a thread to make someone else look foolish.
In the past I thought it would be fair game to argue about FACTS, since they're indisputable, but some people would argue with a wall all day just for the sake of the argument.
I even had one stoop so low as to start calling me a liar, in a factual argument.

TB is a great community.
there is definitely an occasional problem...
but I agree with others, some of these other places - even some music forums - can deteriorate far worse and last far longer. our mods are pretty good here.

Some people have to right 100% of time. Good for them. I come here for help when needed, offer advice where I can and enjoy some of the comedy gold TB provides.

really the nastiness isn't a problem for me. it's the general lack of reading comprehension that spawns the nastiness that I dislike.
