Ya, really! The Jazz Bass has been around way longer than this kid, I'm sure. If anything, the OP should have to explain his existence to the Jazz Bass.

Why the Jazz Offset Body??

A topic is a terrible thing to waste.
jazz bass looks ergonomicly shaped... but in fact you can't go more wrong than the jazz body
it doesn't balance when in sitting position... it you have it up to high around your neck the shortend contours compared to a P bass make it less comfortable.
i say a J bass is a tipical example of how looks can be decieving

edit: no, I don't think, de Jazz is the best, but it looks cool.
a good bass MUST look cool.
I figured the shape came about because Leo ordered 5,000 control plates that wouldn't fit on a P-Bass body.
Why? I don't have an opinion regarding J body - in fact I think it looks good. But why would discussing its design principle be a waste?

i actually prefer the P-Bass body design ,
but the Jazz shape is classic , lean and clean .

+1 Best answer . . .It's to discourage players from leaving the bass on the floor, leaning against the amp. (Doesn't work - I still do it.)

Its got that jet age vibe going on, better living through chemistry and it was the companion Bass to the Jazz Master guitar, just like the P-Bass is the companion to the Tele and now the Jaguar Bass to the .um Jaguar guitar

I think the P will always be king . . .
I've got a fretless J with one of the slimmest necks on the planet, yet, after an hour or so, the hand starts to cramp and the P feels more comfortable again . . .
