Why would a luthier feel that a 15 string

Will you eventually reveal the bridge designer? It would be cool to be able to get aftermarket bridges and/or individual saddles for a 12 string and such...
Believe me it's not.
I know where most musicians are today. And I do my own thing for the most part.
+1. I'm not bashing conventional basses, but sometimes odd can be fun. Having grown up listening to Cheap Trick, King's X, and Pearl Jam, there's something cool about THAT sound. Would I use it for everything? Nah. Would it be cool here n' there? Sure.

While I do have and love the EHX POG, it is something completely different.
There's no substitute for coursed strings.
Just the same as you can't use an octaver on 4-string as alternative for a 5-string. (this question got asked a few times in the effects forum)
Question: do the coursed string put that much tension on a neck?

I'd say that if you are willing to pay good money for a custom bass then that is what you should get, a bass made how you want it, seeing as that is the luthiers job.
I dunno, most musicians focus on what they and others think can't be done. Guys like JAUQO III-X are just crazy enough to take that risk. (shrugs) I guess I grew up with the notion "nothing ventured, nothing gained".
It's their job to get it right. I don't know who thought it was a joke, but I would respect a luthier who respectfully thought something like this was a little beyond their limits. You don't want to spend a lot of $ and get something that can't perform.
It's the same mentality that causes some folk to say "if it's not a Precision with Flats through a Portaflex, it's not *REAL* Bass". These are the guys that give me a hard time when I play a Six'er through a wah and a fuzz - it doesn't sound like Jamerson/Dunn/McCartney/etc. so it has no validity.

Some of my favorite players have never ventured far beyond P or J basses, because it works for them and sounds great, but that doesn't mean I have to limit myself personally.

The luthier is the one building it after all. He also has to give it a warranty and for the sake of credibility, it must work properly and sound decently.
All this requires a bit more skill and thinking than deposing a pile of ca$h on a desk and asking the guy to buy whatever you have in your head.
If he doesn't feel like he can achieve something good/doesn't want to be bothered, I will see it as a respectable decision.

this is the exact reason.
if you're actually serious, find a luthier, make friends, then ask him.
