Why would someone do this? (Fender Bass VI)

Just remember, worse things have been done to much nicer Fenders.
Thats easy to restore. Now this bass makes you hold back the vomit, you would also be buying it from the guy who butchered it and thinks its worth 5k still.

Many original custom colors (and sunbursts) met their fate with the stripper and sandingpaper, to have that desirable seventies "poo brown" stain.
Wait, what are you bemoaning? The natural look, or the bridge humbucker? I assumed the bridge 'bucker, because the natural look isn't that bad.

Here's one that will make you cry:
Years ago, a local pawn shop had a Fender thinline electric (guitar; not bass). I think it was a Coronado. It had F holes, anyway. Maybe it was an arch top. And it might have been a 12 string; can't remember.
It was a somewhat rare factory left handed guitar that someone had converted to right handed. Moved the jack and controls and filled the holes with dowels.

The original post is just one pickguard and pickup away from being made right.
I started playing in 1990, just before so many currently iconic vintage instruments were considered worthless (this was when Neon Pink pointy things with locking Trems were the thing to have). I had a chance to buy a mid 70s J bass for like 200 bucks (but didn't have 200 bucks, and come on, it wasn't toothpaste colored). This was a period where all manner of what would now be collectible guitars were just destroyed. Worst I saw (although maybe fixable) was a Jazzmaster covered in shaggy tiger faux fur. I mean, seriously....

I was impossible to play - I immediately understood why Fender didn't keep producing it. It just wan't a great idea.

I remember when you just about couldn't give away 70s fenders, and now they are commanding vintage prices. Less than the 50s-60s stuff, but still...
I can't... hold it...
it's "moddifications" like these that make me wish there was musical instrument jail. Then the burn out wants almost 5k for this mutilated piece of history?! This is why drugs are illegal.
