Why would someone do this? (Fender Bass VI)

Never, it's a vintage classic. The 3 bolt neck proves it. That's one of those ideas they should have lab tested before putting it into production. I don't mean "Antigua", either. They looked sort of cool new, once they yellow with age they look like ring around the collar.

We always have a laugh about a P bass not being a real one unless it's sunburst/rosewood/tortloaf (with flats, of course). What do you do with an "Antigua" P bass when you change the pickguard? You can't really use anything. Tort won't work, white only serves to point out the injustice of the color scheme, black makes it look like it's trying to hide in the corner (as it should, in shame), pearl makes it look like it's on drugs. Other colors? Nope. Wood grain? Why?

Uh, these things were in bad condition rolling off of the factory line! At best, they could be considered a "period piece" from a sad, sad chapter in US manufacturing. So at best, they are "Art". Bad art, but art nonetheless.

The original post is just one pickguard and pickup away from being made right.

I started playing in 1990, just before so many currently iconic vintage instruments were considered worthless (this was when Neon Pink pointy things with locking Trems were the thing to have). I had a chance to buy a mid 70s J bass for like 200 bucks (but didn't have 200 bucks, and come on, it wasn't toothpaste colored). This was a period where all manner of what would now be collectible guitars were just destroyed. Worst I saw (although maybe fixable) was a Jazzmaster covered in shaggy tiger faux fur. I mean, seriously....

Yeah, that's true, the larger route would still be covered, easy enough.

I still don't understand what you guys are on about...as far as I can tell they stripped it and put (what looks like) a Gibson EB-3 humbucker on it.

It's hardly an abomination, and the humbucker is reversible. Is there something else I'm not seeing?

They turned that bass into a guitar. My guess is Shaq was trying to learn to play guitar but anything smaller than a bass was just not big enough. Like most, he gave up shortly after the lack of instant gratification...
