Why?

I'm sort of astounded by how many people seem to be missing the point here. Cheese wasn't criticising the girl's playing, he was criticising her decision to post a clip of her playing (when she is clearly inexperienced). There's a big difference between the two. We now have a whole generation of kids who have grown up in a society that is terrified of harming children's self-esteem. The result is a generation who doesn't seem to know that they actually aren't good at everything and that, no, not everyone else is interested in seeing their "progress reports". If you want to record yourself fumbling around on your instrument so that you can look back at the footage in ten years and say, "wow, I really sucked back then" that's fine. But why on earth would you put that out on the internet for everyone else to see? :hmm:

I get his point, but couldn't it have been made without singling her out?

Welcome to the 21st century ,kids post stuff for their friends to see, I don't think she posted a link on TB asking if she's doing ok. As far as posting for the world to see goes, well don't watch it. Really, some of you sound like bitter old men.

Instead, why not complain that Dr Cheese posted a stupid thread in "recordings" on a bass forum, just to gripe about youtube? It should be in "misc" at best and smells of trollishness at worse.
What the hell does kids posting on Youtube have to do with making an actual recording?
Now get off my lawn!

Why not single her out? Hers is as good an example as any. Besides, SHE posted the video making it available for the world to see. If you can't take the criticism, don't post a video on Youtube - it's that simple. And the argument about "not watching" if you don't like something is beside the point, as far as I'm concerned - kind of like the whole "love it or leave it" mentality. Oh, and Cheese: bad, bad, bad! I sincerely hope you learned your lesson about posting in the wrong forum... :p

If you must know, I was doing a search for clips of Yamha RBX260F basses, and a clip of this young lady playing an RBX270 came up.

I am really struck by the fact that so many of you guys are mad that I laughed at a clip of a young girl playing bass. If this were a boy, would you be as mad? I know some will say it doesn't matter, but I doubt it. :hmm:

Part of being on Youtube is that what your post can be commented on by whoever sees it. I laughed a bit. I already said I wished her well, but I am not about to apologize because I gave my honest opinion when I first posted, so there is no point in backing away from that.

If you guys want to come off as chivalrous by criticizing me, have your fun!:)

I wasn't trying to break yer stones too hard. It's hard to put "eyebrows" in a internet post

Cheese I'm not mad that you posted the clip because it's a girl playing(I honestly could care less of the gender). My post was based off of your original comment.

Again she's only been playing for about a month.

Jauqo, I never said a thing about her playing. I questioned posting the clip she did. Brother, I'm barely a beginner compared
To you, so it's not like I have grounds to criticize her ability.
My point is that we should all think about what we post. The weakest player can post something that sounds favorable. Playing along with s Smoke Over Water would have been better than just slapping two
notes. If she wanted to slap, just learn simple riff and record it.

I know you didn't Cheese. But you made it sound like it was such a bad thing for her to post a video of her playing.

I'm not mad at you Cheese.

Im sorry but this is absolute nonsense and NOT that simple

everyone is different and reacts to criticism differently...Some may take it on the chin..some may take it badly and give up... that sort of insensitive attitude gets know one anywhere...

what's sad are the comments from fellow video watchers..:rollno:

+1

Based on the comments, I would wager the average viewer is some twisted old pervert trying to get an email address. The internet can be a sad and disgusting place.

She posts because being an attention whore is all the rage these days. I'm young enough to understand it and old enough to remember when it wasn't like that.

Kids think that everything should be on the internet for public consumption but when you suck at something it's best not to share it with the whole world. Someone should explain this too her. That's not me being mean, it's her sounding like she picked up the bass a couple days ago.

And now I have wasted a few minutes of my life posting this. Damn it!

The suggestion that looking at a girl playing bass is only sexual is pretty lame at best. Honestly, I think it's pretty dumb. Forget her age and gender, she is playing bass. I assessed her choice of material for a video. If my comment, any comment, is going to make her quit, she should never have posted it. If getting criticized on Youtube is rough, try screwing up at a gig and getting dogged!:hiding:

That happens to many, many bassists in her age group.

I clicked onthe video and watched it. While I was watching it I did this weird thing... I read what the subject wrote about the video in question when she posted it. In my browser it only shows one line but if you click on the double arrows it drops down. Here's what it said:

I've been playing for about.....a month xD? And I've taken about 5 lessons so far. lol I was really fidgety and sloppy in the video so I'm a lot worse than I usually am xD lol OTL....but yes I'm just a beginner so need to tell me that I suck or anything like that, since I already know C:. ((I also need to get into the habit of curling my strumming hand when I'm slapping D: ))((I also need to align my thumb up with the string better D: ))

So if anyone has any tips I'd love to here them ((LOL YES I'M WANTING CRITICS NAO D; (only for bass playing though, pictures are still off limits lol) )) so feel free to say anything critic wise as long as it's actually helpful.
lol and as you all now, I AM a girl xD ((lol you know how those Tissue-hime comments always go)).

And if anyone is wondering I'm playing a Yamaha RBX260 and the amp ((which I am sitting on)) is something that I can't remember :D'''''.

I also wanted to post up this video so that I can look back on it like 2 years later and see if I've gotten any better. ((and if I haven't....ho boy, I'll say it right now to my future self....YOU SUCK))

lol Peace at the end cause I'm lame C:!!!

I added the underlines for the really funny parts in light of this thread. It certainly sounds like she has her head in the right place.
:D

So much fail in only three pages.

Brad, I'm not surprised. All the hand wringing about criticizing her was really over the top, IMO. As I said before, I wish her well. Who knows, before we all know it, we may be studying her videos, trying to cop her licks!:bassist:

That's right, so if you react badly to criticism then posting on Youtube might not be such a good idea. Like I said, simple.

Videos like this annoy me. It may sound mean but I can't help it. Regardless of how long she's been playing I fail to see the point of her posting the video. I'm sure I sucked at 1 month too (though her tone is actually nice) but I don't ever remember deliberately subjecting the unsuspecting internet to me sucking on camera. It would be different if she specifically asked for criticism regarding her playing. That would be a reason, a very good reason. But she basically said "This is me playing." from which I can only gather that she was bored, wants attention or wants praise. Call me a dick but I think it's one of that latter two.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying that I'm the best guy that ever picked up the instrument but every time I decide to record a video I ask myself "Are there people out there that will actually like this?" Sure, I record for myself but there's no point in posting to a place where everyone can judge me unless I think that they'll look at it favorably. When it comes to playing a musical instrument, I look at youtube as either a recital hall or a classroom and this video falls into neither category.

Also, I honestly cannot see how this video has more likes than dislikes especially considering how critical youtubers can be. Maybe enough people haven't seen it yet?
youtube is for anyone to upload whatever they want and you don't have to watch it

Pretty clear why she posted her video, and pretty clear why the OP posted this thread. Neither were taken for there intended purpose, gotta love the interwebs!

I criticized it for my own reasons which still stand. My critic was based on my own sense of art. It had nothing to do with her motivation.

Then why title the thread "why"?

Sure it would be swell if all basses and amps that I could be interested in were sent to Ed Friedland for a review so I could see it put through the paces by a pro, but for now, things are the way they are. My parents didnt get hard rock, now older folks dont get kids posting everytime they go to McDonalds. I maintain alot of this is a generation gap.
Perhaps we should actually be pushing the builders to make better use of the technology available and to be more aggresive in allowing objective professional reviews of their gear. Get all the endorser's to post 2 clips a year as a requirement for gear. Give discounts for good reviews from regular guys like us. After a few months, your top search results will be good, helpful reviews.

Well, I suppose it's true then. Everyone is the star of their own movie. No stopping it so I might as well make a video of my upcoming fuel pump change.

I'm sure the Youtube community would enjoy a video of me with a 1/4 full gas tank sitting on my chest because that's probably where it'll end up! LOL!

It'll probably help the next guy wondering how not to do it.
:D
