I criticized it for my own reasons which still stand. My critic was based on my own sense of art. It had nothing to do with her motivation.

She actually laid out in detail why she posted it. She asked for constructive criticism. She knew where she was skillwise (even has a sense of humor about it) and wants to get better. The video diary aspect of it makes sense to me.

Showing where she is seems like a good starting point for that critique.

Again, I'm guessing I'm one of the few who actually reads the full descriptions. I've found them to be enlightening.

Why not single her out? Hers is as good an example as any. Besides, SHE posted the video making it available for the world to see. If you can't take the criticism, don't post a video on Youtube - it's that simple. And the argument about "not watching" if you don't like something is beside the point, as far as I'm concerned - kind of like the whole "love it or leave it" mentality. Oh, and Cheese: bad, bad, bad! I sincerely hope you learned your lesson about posting in the wrong forum...

Hers was a great example IMO but not of what you're talking about. Maybe some folks learned something with this video after all.

Sure it would be swell if all basses and amps that I could be interested in were sent to Ed Friedland for a review so I could see it put through the paces by a pro, but for now, things are the way they are. My parents didnt get hard rock, now older folks dont get kids posting everytime they go to McDonalds. I maintain alot of this is a generation gap.
Perhaps we should actually be pushing the builders to make better use of the technology available and to be more aggresive in allowing objective professional reviews of their gear. Get all the endorser's to post 2 clips a year as a requirement for gear. Give discounts for good reviews from regular guys like us. After a few months, your top search results will be good, helpful reviews.

I was trying to cut you some slack, but I don't think you have a point. Whenever someone addresses you straight on, you either back-track or play the misunderstood martyr. You wanted to laugh at someone who openly says she's a beginner and put it up to post her progress and when no one wanted to join in, you act like you were wronged. Sucks to be you, I guess.

Yes I did say that I was looking for clips of a bass, I can see where you got the Ed Friedland reference. I was not looking for some beautiful performance. I just said that I that I thought it was goofy to post what she did. I don't need you to agree with me. I just felt that many of you were uncomfortable criticizing a young girl. As I said before, anyone who posts a clip can be criticized, and I will never back away from that.

You're right. I should have read her description. That said, I still feel that many men are just uncomfortable criticizing a young woman or girl. The ironic thing is that many TB'ers will also turn around and say that accomplished female players are overrated.

Speaking for myself, I just found laughing at someone who said they just started beneath what I have come to expect from you. From my perspective, it had less to do with the gender of the youtuber...but more to do with my overall preexisting impression of you as a fair and open-minded member of TB. So, in fairness, if this thread had been posted by someone I was not familiar with, I probably would have just gone on to the next thread and forgot about this one, deeming it irrelevant to me.

I'm sorry to have let you down. I honestly have tried to make a difference between the choice of the topic for the video instead of the actual player, but I guess that distinction is too fine.

Once again, I am easily in the bottom third of TB players myself in terms of skill.

Like I said, I started by watching the clip and reading the description so this entire thread was downhill from the start for me. I knew that the reason behind her posting had zip to do with ego (basically what she was being criticized for IMO), that she appeared to be coming from a positive place which frankly was pretty refreshing. Then I read what was being said and it was pretty clear no one would say it had they read her motivations.

That this thread went as long as it did with no one reading it was a bit of a surprise. I just knew someone else would mention it before I got to the point where I posted three pages in.

Even Anthony Jackson just randomly plucking two notes would not leave a whole lot for analysis.

I see your point. I'm not saying she should have played what I would have played, I just think that playing something recognizable as a riff or melody would allow her to judge herself better since I now know that was her goal. I think that also reinforces my original point.

I think I'm done now. IMO, all questions have been answered.

And I'm saying judging herself at the point she currently was could've been based on an inability to play licks at that point. She could be doing all that she could do at that point. She knows she wasn't very accomplished at that point and has a record of it. IOW as she said, she knows she sucks LOL. And she's trying to get better. Esxcept I don't think she actually sucked.

I did notice her use of her left hand for muting, which is something that many don't figure out for years.


I'm done too. This has been an interesting thread indeed.
