I'd highly recommend against putting a bass on layaway. Or a TV, or pretty much anything else for that matter.

My wife doesn't worry about me spending money on gear. She has never given me a hard time about anything I've ever wanted to do. I make a comfortable living and have done many high profile gigs with some very well known artists. My wife has always been very supportive. In fact, several years ago she bought me a Sennheiser wireless for my birthday.

My only advice is to go out and play as many as you can until you find the bass that speaks to you. Finding the right one in person trumps the convenience of online purchases if you get something you're not 100% in love with.

My wife is also a musician - she was a guitar teacher when I met her, and she eventually received a degree in voice; she now sings with the Nashville Opera, as well as in our Heart tribute band. She *still* gives me grief over $$ for gear (we've got the money as well - it's some sort of principal or something). You've got a good one there! Congrats!
obvious beginner,... sorry, but that's what you sound like. i'd like to go into detail about my experience with MIM basses but it would be a waste of time. gl.

Do me a favor, don't tell me what my wife would and would not do. You don't know her. I have been married for 22 years and have always bought whatever I wanted, whenever I wanted. She has never said a word about it.

I earn a very nice living as well.
And did so as a professional musician more-so than I would guess 90%+ of the guys here on TB as well.
I just have a hard time believing anyone when they say they pretty much buy whatever they want whenever they want, especially when you venture up to the 1K range (couple hundred- yeah, I get it)
(BTW, been married 14 years, with her since high school- about 23 years now- I should actually figure out exactly how long one day, she might just ask!)
Again, unless you make enough to where money is no object- which could be the case, if so, awesome!
Or you're a complete and utter dis-respectful jackpole and waste of oxygen of a "man" and treat women like yesterday's trash. And we all know guys like that.

Yup...so much so, the OP himself bailed and started a "Part Deux" thread to get away from the childish analysis of what other people's wives do and think...then continue to ignorantly analyze.

I'd also advice against a brand new MIM P if all you have to spend is $1k. Timber and hardware wise, they are fine, but the electronics need attention. I ended up with Dimarzio PJs in mine and a proper earthing/shielding job done by a local builder. His assessment was it was as nice as the MIA Ps afterwards but before it was a humming, string clicking machine of frustration.
+11 on the buy used. and don't layaway!

wait for Musician's Friend to run a 15% off sale and snag a new American or Highway One model for $1000.00 or less. Sometimes you can find one that was returned and they knock an additional $200.00 off the price. I got a brand new American Jazz for $850.00 from MF last summer.

Yup well. The ugly was that the OP says he is in a marriage (like mine) where $1000 gets discussed. He was then dissed by somebody with a different kind of marriage. That's a problem; not what kind of marriage you have but how you respect another man's ways. Keep your nose out of other peoples business is the way I've always heard it.

You are right we all know people who fit into the latter category. Didn't mean to jump on you but I get offended when people assume to know what other people's lives are like.
Just to give you an idea of what my wife is like. We are having a blizzard here in the northeast. My snow blower, which I have had for about 15 years died so we brought it to be fixed. The manager at the shop said that since it is so old we would be better off buying a new one. My wife said no big deal, if you want one then buy one. She has the same attitude about music gear. As long as the bills are taken care of, anything else is not an issue.
Buy a used Ernie Ball Music Man Sterling..... You can get one in the classified section of TB Forum I am sure.... They retail for 1400-1800. But many available for under $1k. If must be Fender, go for a MIA P or J Bass or a Geddy Lee.... Can definitely get one for under a grand.

Hmmm...different from my experiences.
Besides, a brand new MIM can be had for about $500...sometimes less if you watch the sales and price matches. I'm guessing any shielding or electronics attention (even fresh Lindys) can be had for waaaay less than $300, leaving you with fine timber, hardware, and upgraded electronics.
