Ok Ladies and Gents the wife says I can get a new bass today if I keep it under $1,000 dollars. I do have to put it in lay away though.
I have a ESP/LTD B404SM with active EMG pups right now. After spending many months on this website I have acquired GAS for a Fender P bass. I want a USA made bass but I'm nor ruling out the MIM models either. Reason for that is that I also need a wireless unit. I want a Line 6 G30. So, with that in mind should I go greedy and get the MIM/and wireless or just get USA model? Thanks

You should be able to snag a US P Bass for 600-800 or so used. I recently sold an American Vintage Reissue '62 P Bass for less than $1000 total. Played it 4-5 times total.

Look used for the bass and you shoud easily grab both.

Consider a MIM Classic '50s P. Great bang for the buck. Even new they're only $750 on Musicians Friend, etc. You'd have money left over for a case and a set of flats!

If you buy one used you can get a really sweet deal.

If I spent $1000, I'd be looking for 2 good used basses. You have humbuckers, so one bass would have a P or PJ setup and the other would be a Jazz bass style.

Don't forget the most important thing. Buy the wife some flowers and say THANK YOU. Its right there on page 2 of the manual.

If you find a nice clean one, it's pretty obvious that a used bass is a better value. I have no opinion on the various MIA models - I've found that a good one is a good one, whether MIA, MIM, or MIJ. Enjoy.

I also would make $1000 fit two basses unless I could find a really special used bass - like a Gretsch hollowbody with Thundertron pickups - for just under $1000.

I'd say buy the best bass $1000 can get you. Usually I'd say go used to maximize your dollar. But only having the option of using the Layaway might limit your options, so don't be hasty on picking a bass. Check all your surrounding stores (I'm assuming this is GC you're takling about), and check their used online website. Talk to a store clerk for what you need to do to get it, they can probably store transfer it in for you.

and yes, used p bass, or jazz, or whatever. just buy used, you will get more bass for your money.

With CASH in hand you can negotiate.

With lay-away... interest, tax, grief. You'll end up with a $700 non-negotiated bass, for $1,000.

With CASH, you might be able to score a $1,200-asking-price instrument.

if it were me, i'd forget about the wireless and find the most comfortable and lightest weight, used AV RI p bass that you can find for $1K or less.

This is a little like changing the oil in your truck. Regular spousal maintenance prevents the eventual breakdown in patience with expanding bass collections. Play your cards right and she'll be circling stuff in the Musician's Friend mailer that she wants you to have.
