Will 2020 be the year without music?

the numbers for US influenza deaths in 2018 to 2019 was 34,200
that is a government number not mine

you accuse me of " excusing numbers "
4 months of = 396 shut the country down
4 months of = 8,550 do nothing
Again, the first US death was three weeks ago. Not four months ago. And we're having to cut down on testing in the US because medical personnel are running out of masks. Yes, simple masks.
Do nothing, really? We did nothing to battle swine flu? We do nothing to battle the regular flu? Ridiculous.

You really need to understand that the danger of this disease is not the gross mortality rate. It's the rate it spreads. Covid-19 is extremely contagious.
If you have a mortality rate of 3% and infect 1-million people, you just killed 30,000 people.
Example: 20-million people live in the greater Los Angeles area. Let's say half of them get infected (the projection for urban areas without taking distancing steps) at a 3% mortality rate.
In this scenario, we just killed 300,000 people.
This is not taking into account things like hospital overload where other people who are sick or injured could not be treated and also die.

So - yeah, there's a cost to stopping this thing, and it's a cost worth paying.

Agree. Only add that it will take even more of a beating than it already has for local talent performing locally.
On the upside. Perhaps more late boomers will rediscover their musical roots from their early years by sourcing it online and come out of this with some expectations of seeing/hearing performed live. For me, it would be power trio or trio plus vocals/front person or similar.

what if they closed every Club and Concert Hall because of a " Flu" epidemic
be so outraged as a musician and a club owner losing your business to the Flu
employees losing jobs and cant make rent, car payments, and feed their kids cause of the " Flu"
like i said when i was 12 years old, putting on concerts in my room was pretty fun.
but hey we imagined the screaming fans and all the people seeing us a idols
entertainers with talent that people love and get inspired by.
No matter how many times you show people that the Flu always has and always will kill more people.
You cant accept it as a excuse to force you into isolation, force your business to fail, pass laws that take your rights away.
pass laws that make everyday things we do. illegal
you see the " flu" is so normal to everyone its no big deal. and yes a complete outrage if the flu was the excuse.
You have to make a " new" virus. Something that makes taking your rights and freedoms away.
then " accept" its all worth it.

rather you play a sold out show with 200 or 20,000 people
nothing beats the roar of a live band, the cheers of your fans.
the energy of the crowd, the way the crowd bonds, dances, stand together, sit on shoulders
crowd surf etc etc. its not just the bands and the music. some concerts define " turning"
points of society as a whole.
oh just wait, the numbers will keep going up, and the laws will get passed.

All those numbers and you ignore the graph that would answer your questions. If you look at deaths or cases mapped over time by country. The graphs for countries not in lockdown continue to spike. Only the countries that severely restricted their citizens movements and interactions are managing to flatten the curve.
Maybe that is the reason societies that place a high value on personal freedoms are resorting to draconian measures that are also hurting their economies so badly.
Reading the last two pages has anecdotally proved my theory that musicians are good at counting, but bad at math. Especially ones quoting totals for a disease that has yet to run its course while ignoring that disease's contagion rate, hospitalization percentage, and mortality percentage. Take those numbers and apply them over the top of your difficult flu season and the number is far higher than the 34,200 flu deaths. 0.2% for flu vs 3.5% for C-19. 34,200 turns into 598,500 by the time it's run its course. Of course this ignores a far higher mortality rate than 3.5% for those over 60 or those with circulatory (high blood pressure to heart disease), respiratory (from asthma and allergies to emphysema), and immune system issues regardless of age.
Don't get me wrong, the sky isn't falling, but there is a tornado watch, so you may not want to go outside and play.

For me music is sanity and survival...especially in the current situation. Yeah the element of performance has to be sidelined for a while and there is a huge amount of people heavily effected by that but one of the important elements of music is the element of creativity and the context in which to explore it. Most peoples music does not get developed on stage but in a room with one or few people.
Thinking positively we have all been given the gift of time to explore creativity. On top of this is a new and unfamiliar dynamic to many people...a character building situation where fear and uncertainty rule. IMO the best music I have ever heard come from darker and challenging situations be it personal or collectively. I think we will see an amazing era of new and incredible music born out of the context of adversity.
So no 2020 is not the year without music. For me 2020 is the year music found a new beginning. Lets think to a future where we go out and perform and tell the story of overcoming adversity in the future.

On top of this is a new and unfamiliar dynamic to many people...a character building situation where fear and uncertainty rule. IMO the best music I have ever heard come from darker and challenging situations be it personal or collectively. I think we will see an amazing era of new and incredible music born out of the context of adversity.
So no 2020 is not the year without music. For me 2020 is the year music found a new beginning. Lets think to a future where we go out and perform and tell the story of overcoming adversity in the future.
