Will bassists soon no longer be needed?

it's an instrument. sometimes it's used, sometimes it's not. it's usually used. but it's just an instrument. most people play at least more than one instrument nowadays anyway. depending on what scenario you're in bass might not be needed but a musician certainly will be. It's just a tool. Don't get too worried about defending the sanctity of bassdom or anything like that

I think the ability to "ape" a machine playing bass is what's keeping a lot of bassists working.

i have a mate who plays drums for techno guys because the comp generated drums sound too sterile.he works with bassists and git players who make loops and sections that although cannot be distinguished as LIVE by a casual listen, the brain can tell the difference between a computer generated performance and a human one.nearly every time the human generated performances just sound better. i guess its a bit like the valve/ss thingy although thats getting tricky now as the tech gets better.

Your looking at it wrong.

If what your saying is true there would be no need for guitarist bass players and drummers since the synths would have put everyone out of work from the 70s.

Truth is you have nothing to worry about, your getting the criticisms your getting because those people only listen to punk, blues or country where the bass players usually play very simple lines focusing on rythm rather than melody.

You are probably adapting that style as well because u still lack the confidence to venture outside of the pocket.

Try this listen to more world music like reggae. A great song is woman I need you by sizzla. Chant a psalm - steel pulse. Is another incredible song. That song really opened my eyes to what a bass player can do.

Old school rnb is good too specifically Teddy pendergross, Luther Ingram, the isley brothers, al green etc.

Red hot chilli peppers is good too and sublime. If your into rock listen to led zepplins live show not the studio recordings. Also start listening to more boss a nova and jazz.

This stuff really helped my playing style evolve and made me a more complete and dynamic player try it out

It's because people are stupid sheep. No one thinks for themselves anymore. No one appreciates how hard it is to play an instrument and master it. "I can do that on a computer! What's the big deal?"
You want to know why education in the USA sucks? Because the government wants, desires, craves an illiterate, brain dead citizenry because stupid people are easier to lead to the slaughter.
Sorry, I'm just in a crappy mood.

You are a guitarist, a bass guitarist. a 2nd or 3rd guitarist in the band. Dont pay any attention to people's ignorant comments. If you wish to hear or show someone exactly what a BASSIST does, listen to Allen Woody, from GOVT MULE. He is/was one of the best musicians ever. And 80% of listeners cant tell who is playing what, other than drums.or piano. Most cant look on stage and understand which is a bass or a guitar, . few know nothing more than half the chorus, and thats usually after the song is almost over. Anyone that matters will respect your efforts. SO........you just become the best bassist you can , and enjoy doing your thing. I think all ,young bass players have wrestled with the feeling, that they feel they gotta explain or justify, what their role is in the band. I started on a pedal steel guitar @ 14 yrs old. You cant imagine how many folks thought I was playing a little keyboard. and we didnt have a piano in the band. Tell them that your the one ,every other instrument is following. YOU ARE THE ONE THAT BRINGS THE THUNDER!!!!!!

"your "instrument" just goes "don don don"

and guitars just go twang twang twang

and drums just go thump thump thump

and singers just go yeah yeah yeah

So I guess this means all music is coming to an end, eh?.......which I guess might as well happen so that we can all just sit around thumbing our Iphones. :hmm:

(and to think that I had myself convinced that I knew everything back in the early 70's when I was in high school. How innocent and adorable!)

Unfortunately, you speak the truth, my friend.

I wouldn't say everyone is a sheep. I would, however, agree that the bulk of the human population definitely is though! (over 90%). Look at how many people just stare at the TV day in and day out, watching programming that is completely and utterly mindless (gee.....what's gonna happen in the next episode of ????????). Are you kidding me? Have we as a species really been reduced to that?? That's why I stopped watching TV over five years ago. What a relief! My only regret was waiting so long to do that!

And to quote a modern rock band. "I've been around the world and noticed only stupid people are breeding" ..truer words were never spoken. Humans who have no limit on their reproductivity for whatever the reason are stressing the planet. If that wasn't politically correct I apologize. If this is wrong please mods. Scratch my post. Just my 2 cents worth. I got my sarcastic cynicism from my dad.
