Heck yeah, every other instrument you learn helps you understand each others' jobs better. The best way to find out what a good, supportive bass player sounds like, is to play with one. That's also a great way to figure out what a bad bass player sounds like 
Even just jamming with backing tracks on YouTube, you'll find better and worse rhythm sections, and see music from a different perspective.
