will my cab take this?

I need to get another amp and I have been looking at the
GK700RB, but I want to make sure that my cab will take the extra power. Its a new Ampeg SVT-410HLF so I am pretty sure it will, it rated to 500 watts continuous. Right now I am playing through an old 400RB which sounds great but lacks the power, I have to crank it to keep up with both guitarists. Any thoughts fellow bass stompers?

With that cab, it would make little to no difference in volume to switch from a 400RB to a 700RB. That 410HLF cab is limited by the maximum excursion of the speakers regardless of what amp is used.

You'd be better off switching to a more efficient cab, and preferable a cab (or stack of cabs) that's taller, i.e. closer to ear level.

A more powerful amp can help too depending on the cab choice.

Like anything if it starts to fart/distort it's time to back off a little but those 2 would work well together. Shouldn't have a problem getting loud enough. Most of the time we'd say add speakers instead of power but in your case, your 410hlf can take a good deal more than a 400rb has to give.

Thats my problem, I can only get so loud before it starts to distort.

You ever move a 410hlf? I wouldn't wanna move 2 of them.

OP, the other way to come at this is to keep the smaller amp and get a higher spl cab. Something that's an honest 3db more sensitive would give you the same volume increase as doubling your power.

Actually moving it isn't that bad. It has wheels and a push bar on the back, simply tilt and roll. Now my other cab, the one with the 18", thats a monster!

Well, you can't add another cab to your amp anyway, you're already at 4ohms. You could sell it and get a pair of higher spl 8ohm cabs or buy a poweramp to drive additional cabs.

You can get poweramps now for like $300 that can do 300ish watts per channel @ 4ohms.

That may be a smarter way to go than getting the 700. You'd keep your same pre tone and just have more power/expandability

Unless the guitarists are playing through 1x12s, and at tasteful volumes even then, he may have no choice. I assume he's already read the FAQs and searched the appropriate threads and has his cab tilted back so he can hear himself and isn't scooping the mids.

IME Ampeg cabs are as sensitive as any. Claims to the contrary remain to be proven.
Now my other cab, the one with the 18", thats a monster!

So why aren't you using it along with the 410? :confused:

I've gigged hlf's, heard plenty of other guys gig them as well. There's not much going on in the upper mids, it's not a cut through the mix kinda deal. Seems like they're made to put a heavy bottom under a rock band. One of them can do that if you've got enough amp to throw at it, I've done it. The 700 should be a good fit for it but if it's still not enough you're at the end of the line as far as chaining more cabs hence the poweramp. Then if one hlf with some power behind it isn't enough you could sell the 18 and get a second one. If that still isn't enough the problem is in your guitar players, not the bass rig.

This was my thoughts as well. Our music is pretty heavy and we are tuned down a whole step so I need the bottom end, I am just lacking on power. This is why I thought a 700 would be a good fit. I shouldn't have to turn up as much to compete with everyone else.
