Will Victor's double thumb technique 'spoils' the nail?

im do quite a while of double thumb, and found my nails on the thumb is sanding off by the strings.

wonder will the nail end up getting thinner and thinner until the layer or nail gone?

or maybe i just used the wrong way to double thumb?

+1 here! Whenever I try it, most of my thumb nail ends 'sanded'! It is really only the surface though relative to the thickness of the nail. But then I only try that technique a little as I do not practice it enough to use beyond a small envelope.

I didn't see this one coming! I've seen Victor's thumbnail many times. It looks normal to me. And he's been double thumping for 40 years.

I've been double thumping over 20 years and my thumbnail looks the same.

But I don't double thump a lot. A lot of us 'old school' thumpers can single thump very fast. So there's not as much of a need to double thump. I notice in my teachings that a lot of the 'newer' thumpers can't single thumb very fast so they're using double thumps to compensate. Almost to the point of 'overuse'. I think that my thumbnail isn't 'sanding' off because I only double thump when I need to. It's the same with Victor. He can single thump very fast but people only notice the double thumps.

I know some guys who have had success by adding a fake fingernail to their thumbnail. And I know guys who have used clear nail polish.

I like double-thumping because I can use the thumb under the string to damp the first thumb a touch before coming upwards. That makes a nice emphasis.

Yo Ian,

You don't have to double thump to do that. All of double thumpers go through the string and land on the next string. That exist independently of double thumping.

Yes,..,I grew up in DC and Oxon Hill. I did play in Go-Go bands.
