@Rayz28, I've had the BigSplits in a couple basses and to date, it's my favorite pickup ever.
That said, I was dead set on getting them for this... when they came out with the BigRig.
I looked for reviews, but no one seems to have them. So I wanted to see for myself, took a shot, and now they will be moving into their new home very soon.
As for pickup spacing calculation, that's a funny story...
I found measurements for all of the classics. Using the math, I plotted them where they should sit on my project, on the template. And where there seemed to be space were most configurations would go, I drilled into the top.
But I was off in my neck position.
So when I went to space it like "70s J bridge/P neck", it turned out that the holes I drilled were not in the area to be routed.
OOOOPS!
So they are as close to that as I could muster, but are now spaced more like "60s J Bridge/J neck". So this may actually sound quite a bit J-ish.
However, as a last minute complication, I've wired each pickup to a series/parallel switch, then installed a global S/P switch as a pull on the tone pot. That means, before blending and active EQ, there's 12 different pickup configurations.
That should give me a really good idea how these compare to the Splits.
(And speaking of that, another reason I wanted to try the Rigs was because they were 4 lead and splittable.)
TODAY'S PROGRESS
I managed to have a very productive day today.
Made a bullshirt neck holding jig:
That took a LOT of time. And it still needs the details attended to. But it's pretty close to getting a finish.
The BODY got some finish started. I'm just doing straight TruOil. And I found out today that coffee filters are probably the best for wiping it on for me. I was using rags and socks and pads, but the filter spread well, didn't soak it all up, and it looked great.
Oddly enough, the back wood got darker than I thought it would.
But I'm very happy with the colors and figure overall. I'm just going to keep adding coats until it doesn't absorb anymore and then I'm going to buff it as best I can.
THEN... after all the bass work, changed my car's rear brakes, by myself, in the dark, in the snow, in less than an hour, and with no power tools.
I'm on a roll!
