Winter 2017 Build Off - Speak of the Devil

Wow! Some sound on the Devil! Hits me right where I live. Which is to say Progsville mostly.

I especially like how the design theme was carried over to the case and strap. That extra attention to detail is admirable.

Thanks! Outside of the recording, it's quite deep. The pickup position is just north of a Precision location, but the pickup itself I think highlights the high end, so that nice "ric-ish" grind is on top of that deep bottom. I recorded it though an SM-57, which is a great mic, but not optimal for bass. The strings I'm using are of unknown origin. In fact, I think they are from at least two different sets. Once I get a set of RotoSounds on there it should rock pretty hard, I think. I've got about 10 things on my "to buy" list, and strings are pretty high on the list.

I wish routing was easier.

I really need to start up my second 2x15 cab build again.

I think the hardest part about routing is the whole set up, getting (or making) the jig together, and positioning everything. Once that's done, the actual routing part is easy.

I think the sound is pretty much perfect where it is. I really like that round low with something slightly edgy or chimey on the top quality. Most of the basses I favor (Rippers, G3s, Peavey's T-series, Rics, etc.) get something similar. Almost a stereo signal effect while still being mono. It's like your brain and ears want to split it into separate highs and lows. My GF calls it my "bipolar bass" sound.

Whatever it is, I like it. And I really like that bass. Each one you're doing is more surprising than the last. How cool is that?

I've only ever routed free-hand, which as you might imagine, is incredibly stressful and probably dangerous. When I get started on actually finishing that second cab, I want to use the workshop my guitarist inherited from his father, because free-handing everything again is just not what I want to do.

As far as mics go, if you want to use a mic on a cab to record, I highly recommend the Electro-Voice RE20. The Shure SM-7B is also really good.

The Heil PR40 is also good.

They're more spendy than a 57 or 58, but not that expensive.

My amp's head case and my conversion of a Sunn 1200S 6x12 cab into a 2000S 2x15 (the designs use the same box but different baffling, obviously) were both done with free-hand everything just through lack of anything else. And it was at points terrifying.
