Winter 2017 Build Off - Speak of the Devil

Very nice tone - deep yet defined, I like it!

To recap, the new challenges on this build:

First burst finish
First full length fretboard inlay
First laser engraved inlay and truss rod cover
First bolt-on neck from scratch
First Devil bass body style
First use of MRC tuning machines
First use of inset jack/control plate

*edit - First use of aluminum stiffening rod

*2nd edit - recessed jack and control plate

Good question. I'll have to give that a try tomorrow.

And as a reward to myself for finishing the build before the deadline, I bought myself a new router and a couple of bits.

Variable speed, fixed base, 1/2" and 1/4" collets, and some really expensive bits - a 3/4" pattern bit, and a 1" straight bit. I will be working on the neck through version of the Devil bass tomorrow morning. I can't wait to fire this thing up :)
 
I think you got it backwards - what @Scoops wants (I think - I would find it handy) is a tiny router (aka laminate trimmer) with a big collet, not a laminate trimmer bit with a big shaft.


That would be a dangerous tool IMO. Underpowered and low mass, with the possibility of installing a large cutter diameter, 1/2" shank bit. What would be the point?

I'd use it for hard to reach places that I could not get into with a regular router, but could use some regular router bits within reason. You'd have to take off much less material and use quality sharp bits of course.

Just because a particular tool exists wouldn't necessarily stop people from using it incorrectly, and vice versa... :D

That's a fair question.
My rationale is not based on anything scientific. I just want a small, powerful router.
I use a laminate router for everything because of the size. They are easy to work with. There are times I would like to go with a longer/larger bits, but I don't because of the nature of the beast, as you indicate.

Wow! Some sound on the Devil! Hits me right where I live. Which is to say Progsville mostly.;)

I especially like how the design theme was carried over to the case and strap. That extra attention to detail is admirable.
