That's what I'm doing. I figured it would be less, but I have no science to back that up. I'll wait to drill any holes for sure. In the mountain biking world when you drill something to make it lighter we call it "drillium". lol

The formula for string tension is:
T (Tension) = (UW x (2 x L x F)^2) / 386.4
And since we're comparing relative tension we can reduce it down to T= L x F so if standard length and standard tension is 1 unit length and 1 unit frequency that's 1 x 1 = 1 if we half the length and double the frequency we get 1/2 x 2 = 1
I sanded down the two faces of the wood in the sanding planer:
It was hard to see the grain and figuring with the saw marks from the sawmill, it might not show very well in pictures, but there's an area of this wood that has a lot of figuring right in the crotch. I think I'm going to incorporate some of the sap wood into the body as well, it looks really cool, and there's some good figuring in that area. Sanding down the front showed some knots that I didn't know were there, so I'll have to figure out how to hide those too. I thought briefly about incorporating some "live edge" into this build. I'll have to stare at it a bit. The wood is a bit thicker than 1.75" right now, so it should work out well to get to body thickness.
I'm glad to get some sawdust going on this build. I need to cut out the body shape (or at least make this hunk o' wood smaller), it's a pain to work as is.

I use the sanding planer a lot, although for this operation, I probably would have been better off using a regular plane first - this piece was too wide to go through it though.

I need to chip away the bark so I can see what I'm dealing with, but this looks like it would be pretty cool - I'll admit working with this weird shape makes it hard to visualize, I'm used to looking at "standard" bodies:

Version 2.0 of the "live edge" layout. I used Powerpoint to mark the outline, does that mean I'm "digital"?
I worked with my wife last night and I think we've got the final orientation set - it allows for a live edge down at the bottom, with all the nice figuring on the top showing - it will only have one live edge though, not two like above. I'll get it cut out this weekend.
One question: when doing live edge I think I need to remove all the bark, especially in this spot as it will be where your arm crosses the body. I am concerned that removing the bark makes it look less "live". Opinions?
Google is my friend - I did a search for live edge guitars - once I filtered out U2 pictures (ha!) I found a few examples, all with bark removed.

I noticed there was a piece of the white wood that had a straight edge. It would look weird if that wasn't straight compared to the bridge, so that dictated how it lined up to some degree.
I watched a few videos on how to clear the bark off a "live edge", this didn't do what I saw on the videos. Those guys just peeled the bark back, I had to slowly chip away at it with a chisel, but I got there eventually.
I've got a bit more clean up to do, but it looks pretty good:
My dog doesn't like it when my parent's dogs get fed while she's there. I guess I should start bringing food so she can eat too.

Interesting. I've never seen a live edge on a guitar. So you oriented it so that it would work as an arm bevel essentially. Are you sure it's going to be comfortable on your right forearm playing while sitting? The edge looks sharp, but the aestetics are cool if it works.
The edge won't be sharp when I'm done, but there will be a lot of testing for sure, the top on this one will be highly contoured (I think).

My daughter and I were crying with laughter at this today - plus it got our dog going trying to figure out "where the eff that crying dog was". She was sniffing around, cocking her head and listening and whimpering. I think she wanted to try to save her...
I think the best part of the vid is near the end where you can see your lips moving along with her sounds - it's a funny little involuntary thing we primates do...

Oh man. I wish you'd asked about this bridge before you bought it. They're really nasty and hard to use. I sent one back because a gear was missing! It's part of the reason I started using guitar tuners to get away from cheap headless stuff.
I think it's hilarious that you can't see her teeth, looks like she left her dentures out.
This isn't the Overlord one (I'm not sure if that's your reference point). There is one tuner that has a slight hitch on every rotation, I'll take it apart and see what's going on, but other than that it seems to be ok, and even that is just a little bump, not anything serious. I guess it's a knockoff of the one they use on the real Wing basses, it looks pretty much the same. I could end up being disappointed, I will be sure to report back.
Overlord bridge looks like a copy of Steinberger licenced bridge which is simple and functional bridge. I had one of these geared bridges. Sold it right away, not worth using in an instrument IMO. Felt like it was made using just hammer, so rough action and lots of play in every imaginable way.
ah man, you guys are raining on my parade. I'll take a more serious look at the bridge. I HATE that Overlord stamp on that other bridge. I'm not overly picky about many things, but I can't stand the look of that logo.
