You can sand with tru oil, which is a good pore filler. I use 240grit for that, two applications with a few hours in between could do the trick. With shellac you can use fine pumice to pore fill, but I think oil builds up better (quicker). Anyway, do you have something against natural grain? It has its own character too

Did a bit of a test on this last night.
Turned out OK enough for the Buildoff

I should be able to complete this in time
