I did a lot of work on this since I last posted, but you just cant see it in pics as all of the work I did came in the way of sanding. I have most the roundovers all cleaned up nicely, with most of the body sanded to 150, and some spots 220.
My first pass at filling the pores came with a dark shellac. There is some nice chatoyance in the spine I'll probably start Tru-oiling this real soon. Just need to finish profiling the neck. I've also elected to go with a matching flamed walnut headstock plate.

Frustration has been getting at me a bit with this build. Mostly due to my lack of planning.
Getting the round overs right is tedious. Had I planned this out better, I would not have used such thick maple for the accent.
The bridge is also giving me fits. I did get a Badbird, but that bridge is designed to have a tilted neck. I would have to seriously countersink it. So it looks like I'll be going with a Hipshot A style. Had I planned this out better, I would have figured out how to get a 2 degree tilt so I could use a bridge like a Badbird.
But yes, it is coming along nicely.

This bird has a temperament, and likes blood! Yes that's my blood on her beak!
Finally got the whole thing sanded down to 220. I'll put a coat of Tru Oil on it. It will probably need more 220 on some spots.

A bird with that temperment should be able to take down the most formatable of heavy metal guitarists
Didn't someone once say "It's not really your bass until you bleed on it"? Or something like that...
Anyway, this is looking TOO GOOD! When a bass looks just as nice on the back as it does on the front, you know you're doing something right. And you sir, you are killing it. Very nice.
(You may need to make one of those little leather bird blinding masks to keep this raptor from attacking though...
)

Drying paint anyone?
In reality, I won't get this done the way I want by the deadline.
It seems the TruOil wants to sweat out of the pores, so towards the end of this week I'll have to take this down to pretty far and start putting on a finish coat, or something. Won't know till I get there.
I will get something in time for the deadline though.

I think it's looking great. What do you want to do that you don't think you'll have time for?
Get the pores filled, and then, a high luster oil finish on top of that.
I'll probably have to strip this down, mix up some schellac, get the schellac down, level it off, and then finish coats on top of that. too much to do in the limmited time left
I have to put in extended hours for work tonight. Band plays tomorrow night. so that leave me Thurs, Fri, Sat and Sun to get that done. Probably won't happen. I'll have to assemble it Sunday as I know my weeknights are booked next week.
I'll get it up and it will look good, but I'll have to complete the finish after the contest;.
