Winter Build Off 2020 - Uke Space

This is my entry into the 2020 winter build off: Winter Build Off 2020 - Air Space

I've been fascinated by Uke Basses for a while and am taking the build-off as an opportunity to build one. This will be my first "acoustic" style instrument (although it will have a piezo under the saddle). I will be learning as I go in terms of things like bending the sides, etc.

This will be 20 3/4" scale (I'm using a 24.75" guitar fretboard cut down a few frets). Fretboard is ebony, will probably be bound with maple. Maple and cherry laminated neck. Walnut back and sides - the back has some sapwood and light figure which adds some interest. Top is a nice piece of curly redwood I've had stashed. Top of the body may be bound with maple too, if I feel confident bending the maple.

The only hardware I have so far is the strings and some bone for the saddle. I am going to use cutoffs from a scrapped ebony fretboard blank for the bridge. Abalone markers for the freboard and I have abalone strips on order for the soundhole rosette.

I have bracewood and blocks for the heel and neck tenon stashed away somewhere, I couldn't find them for the photo.

I found plans online for a baritone Uke that I am adopting. The body and neck on these plans measure exactly the same dimensions as the Kala u-bass so I figure it's "good enough" as a starting point.

Prior to the buildoff I took advantage of the rules mentioned in the pre-kickoff thread to make a jig for bending the sides, and gluing the neck blank together. It's going to be spotty over the next few weeks finding time to work on this, so the head start will be helpful.

The timing of building this uke bass for the buildoff is perfect, as my son's birthday is in March. He started playing bass this past summer after we built him the headless bass featured in The "other" zombie bass build - I'm planning on having this uke bass completed in time to give him for his birthday, so he can have an "around the house" bass to play for fun versus going down to the basement music room to play his electric bass. I'm excited about the build off, and excited to be making an acoustic instrument, but mostly excited to be making something for him!

I bought a set of the D'Addario nyltech strings (EJ88UB). Since I've never really played a U bass before, I'm kind of guessing at string selection. I want to retain the u-bass character so I didn't pick roundwounds. These strings seemed like the best reviewed of the u-bass specific strings.

I don't know about tuners yet. I have a set of Gotoh GB707's that I may try, but I know the u-bass strings don't fit in "normal" bass tuners well. I may order some of the u-bass specific tuners from Kala, but they're expensive at $80 a set and they don't even have them in stock right now as far as I can tell.

If you have any input I'm all ears! Especially about alternatives for tuners.
 
Last night I glued on the headstock ears and glued the top up. I don't have a good method for gluing such thin panels so I improvised.

I've been on the fence about having a truss rod in this. From reading reviews on the kala basses, it seems like people don't think they're needed. I know I can build a neck that's true without one, so I might leave it out in order to keep the whole thing light.
 
Uke strings are super-low tension, right? And since the neck is much shorter than a "normal" bass, I think you'll be fine without one. Perhaps an aluminum or carbon beam?

Well, I just spent a frustrating several hours trying to learn how to bend sides. I've done some bending for other woodworking projects, but never a side for an instrument, and I just can't get the hang of it. I'm using a side bending blanket and spot-heating with a heat gun, trying to get the waist in first then bend the upper and lower bouts.

With such a small body size the curves are very tight. I feel like I could probably get a dreadnaught sized body bent OK but I just cracked 3 or 4 test pieces and both of my "good" sides. I'm out of wood so time to step away for a bit. Once I cut more wood I may try to make a new pattern with a less severe waist bend.

I admire the attempt you are making at this.

I re-shaped the upper bout of my bending form by about half an inch and widened the belly cut to make the curves much more gentle. After looking at my original form (which I hand-sketched while looking at the not-to-scale plan) I can see I had made the curves way tighter than they should be. I haven't made a positive mold for the body or cut the top or back to shape yet so I have some freedom in terms of getting this right before I'm locked in.

I have about 12 board feet of 4/4 walnut that matches the back so I am going to try to carefully pick the straightest piece with no runout, and I'm going to cut it thinner than my original pieces. My original sides were almost 3mm, it seems like most uke builders are down to more like 1.5mm or 2mm (or they're using plywood). My sides had a tiny bit of gentle flame figure too, which didn't help. The test pieces I made from flatsawn cherry were the easiest to bend well. So I'm going to try to pick straight grained flat sawn walnut from my stash.

I'm fairly confident that I can get this, I just need to realize it's a new skill and I can't expect it to go right the first time.

Plan B, make this a semi-hollow body with a routed out hunk of walnut instead of the built up acoustic body. But I reeeeallllyyyy want to get this to work!

But this is all going to be mostly on hold for the next several days, Santa (aka the lumber yard delivery guy) is getting here in half an hour with a pile of studs and drywall so I can build my new shop in the other end of the basement! :hyper:
