Winter Build Off 2023 - Let Your Nerd Flag Fly

That golden orb now once more at its ebb,
And icy winds menacing from the North,
Another WBO comes hither forth,
One borne of nerdy natures on the Web.

The challenge is intriguing, to be sure:
Construct an instrument of thund’rous lows,
Its nerdy maker’s fascination shows
And elevates the nerdiness most pure.

And rally did the faithful, undertake
To cast their skills and charms one to the next,
In whimsical obfuscation be vexed
As fellow builders’ thirst for mirth did slake.

But what of me? What cleverness have I
That might be put to skillful nerdy use?
All else save me excel in such a ruse,
And I do fear this year shall be a bye.

My hope is not yet dashed, however slight
Feel I my chance this year appears to be.
Perhaps there might some serendipity
Bestow its grace upon my nerdless plight.

Holy cow, man. :D

Nicely done.

I meant to have two entries, even though I don’t have any time to work on either now.
The second is to be a hollow body, 5-string, laminated white and red oak neck through, spruce topped, sycamore backed P-bass.
Got my nerd sign out, went and started to make my wood pile and was reminded about the toilet that needed installing,… back to the garage, started getting the hardware together, what about that kitchen ceiling?,… ok. She is watching TV, I have a moment, and …. I can’t find the 5 string P bass pickup, the pots, or the truss rod, or the 1/4” red oak lamination piece (the only new parts on the bass other than the strings!) and now I’ll have to buy replacements. I spent a good hour searching. There are only a couple places I’d put the pickup and it’s not there, truss rods are big, and how do you lose three pieces of 1/4” x 3” x 48” oak? (Leftovers from a different project) there must be a wormhole here somewhere.

Sing to the tune of Far Over The Misty Mountains.

That guy knows a thing or two about bass, in his own way.

Geoff has an amazing voice. He also does an incredible cover of Ghost Riders in the Sky.

Voiceplay and Geoff Castellucci are awesome, it makes it even more difficult to accept that I cant sing worth a damn.

I enjoy listening to The Charismatic Voice on YouTube. Shes a nerd too, breaks down nerdy vocal techniques, music theory and time signatures, and is into cosplay. Worth a watch (I'm not affiliated with the channel in any way)

Yeah I love her channel as well. And yes, she is very nerdy.

Hey Gang,

Count me in! This is my second post on Talkbass, so I'll point you to my first: My WBO 2023 build thread!

Winter Build Off 2023 - ALL YOUR BASS ARE BELONG TO US
"ALL YOUR BASS ARE BELONG TO US".

A little about me: My name is Josh Crone, I've been playing bass most of my life, and I'm a total nerd (I know that's redundant). I started building guitars when the lockdown started, and this site has been a treasure trove of information. I hope my little contribution helps someone else get started!

Anyone doing something web3 / NFT / crypto / metaverse related?

That’s as tech-nerd 2022 as it gets, and web3 is all about “community” and “builders” so a nice parallel to this forum… which is quite meta innit?

Not sure anyone’s made a phygital functional crossover web3 themed instrument, but if so it probably wasn’t a bass or made by someone approaching it from the physical side.

Would love to see it, or if someone’s considering it but isn’t hip I’m happy to consult (gratis of course) as I’ve been into it since very early days.

Wish you all safe, fun, successful builds, a merry Christmas and happy holidays!
