Here we go!!! In 2022, I built my dream bass. It turned out better than I could have ever imagined. Some of you may seeing that instrument come together - the "Quilted Tiger," named for the most insanely figured slab of maple I've ever seen in my life:

I’m super happy with this bass! Which is why I'm such a huge, gigantic nerd that I have a second identical topwood slab from the same log, and a second identical neck billet, which will allow me to create a matching identical fretless twin!!

I love them! The best word I can think of to describe them is "fidelity." From what I've read about how these things are designed and what makes them work the way they do, the offset pole pieces allow more string vibration to be detected in the horizontal plane...minimizing comb filtering, phasing - apologies if my technical description is not spot-on.

Regardless, the end result is a real richness in tone...each single note has a lot of character in them. The three-way switching setup makes a big difference too, especially with the bridge pickup in series mode. The switching setup is a relatively easy wire-up that adds so much versatility to each pickup, and to the bass overall. In the hands of a few other players, they've indicated to me that the instrument is much more touch-sensitive and responsive than they are used to. Lots of dynamics, combined with the extra depth of tone.

The best analogy I've used to describe these things is if you've ever heard your own voice through a really nice mic preamp and studio desk, it add so much "extra" goodness compared to your standard unamplified sound. That's kind of what the BigRigs do. The bass tone has this added layer of complexity to it. That's the BigRigs.

I really need to find some time to get some recordings of the new bass...it's been on my list for the last few months since I completed it and I've been so swamped with everything else going on!

Insane is the only way to go! I went on the hunt through literally hundreds and hundreds of wood slabs over the last few years in order to find “the one” that would motivate me to get building once again. The goal was something so stunning it could sit on a stage all by itself!
