Winter Build-Off 2023: Twin Tigers!!!

Checking bridge layout to make sure it’s what I need! 19mm brass Hipshot B, check.

Please tell me you used more clamps than that for the actual glue-up?!

Two of the bar clamps is all it takes! Between the jointed edges and the biscuits to align everything, it’s a rock solid seam. One lesson I’ll always remember from my first bass - too much of a squeeze is a bad thing, because you’re losing glue from where you need it the most.
 
Will the younger twin get the same fingerboard inlay as the older twin?

Coincidentally, I was actually working on inlays yesterday. The first bass has a “coastal sea” and the second will get a “coastal land” design, both symbolic of our new home in coastal San Diego. Should make for a really cool pair.

I was taught that pressure spreads out 45 degrees on each side of the clamp. That means the wider the boards, the more widely you can space your clamps. Everything looks good there; tight joint, even pressure, and not too much squeeze out.

I had not heard that before regarding the 45 degree spread, but the concept makes perfect sense. Like it!
 
Just got this bad boy unpacked and built. That’s the good news.

The bad news is that the clutter in the garage and shop has gotten out of hand, to the point where it’s more stressful than it is relaxing and productive to try and get anything done in the environment. I dropped a socket wrench on the floor and the socket separated from the end, rolled off and disappeared somewhere, likely under a box of junk. A hard reset in this place is necessary before I can proceed any further on instruments! Clutter and mess are the enemy of precision work.

Honestly it’s not THAT bad and I could definitely suck it up and deal with it. Problem is, I know I’m not as focused and precise when I’m struggling simply to find something I set on the bench two minutes ago that is now apparently lost in chaos. Hoping to get this place back to where i want it to be this week, and construction can resume.
 
The shop reorganization effort could not come at a better time, as I had started to become concerned about clutter-related safety (ie. trip hazards, dust cleanup, etc).

Unfortunately, I did not expect the safety issue to be something that fell from the sky...the other day, I was in the workshop and had just finished vacuuming. When I was done, I re-spooled the extension cord on the automatic overhead retractor and began walking out of the shop. Next thing I know, I was face down on the concrete.

As it turns out, the retaining pin on the ceiling bracket of the cable retractor snapped off - and all 25+ lbs of sharp-edged metal fell to the floor, hitting me squarely on the back of the head and leaving a deep gash. Thankfully I didn't black out, and my wife was able to come to the rescue...but this could have been much, much worse.

I have reinstalled the cable retractor with a new locking clasp, and reinforced the overhead bracket with two steel cables anchored into the ceiling studs.

The good news is that the gash on the top of my head has healed up and the only real reminder of the incident is some residual neck pain. And the shop reset is almost done, meaning I'll be back to work on instruments in the next couple days.

Take no chances. Over-engineer everything, especially when it comes to your safety.

Wow… glad you’re ok. You figure if something is going to happen it will be a power tool, not the cord.

EXACTLY! I put so much energy into power tool precautions (I actually started the table saw safety thread). But never thought something so seemingly harmless could pose such a hazard.
