Winter Build-Off 2023: Twin Tigers!!!

The body is final shaped and is ready for pickup and electronics cavities, and the neck pocket. It really excited to see this starting to look like an instrument- the other twin is seriously my favorite instrument ever, and the idea of having a matched pair is almost too good to be true…
Used to spend most of my time at Ocean Beach, there was a coffee shop that Jewel used to play at when she was getting started, my g/f at the time was a good friend of hers.
The inlay is set into tinted epoxy. I’ll let this cure up for three or four days before sanding off.
So cool! That's the thing about being here, you never know who you're going to run into. We saw a Tom Petty tribute band a couple years back, and Nathan East's brother was the bass player!
Wow love that inlay!Marking up the rough layout for the inlay on the fingerboard extension. In keeping with the “Coast of San Diego” inlay on the other bass, this one is getting a corresponding palm tree.

Thanks! Excited for the epoxy to finish curing so I can get a look at this thing! It set up nicely overnight but is still soft enough to get a fingernail into the surface. It’s 48 to 72 hours per the instructions but I’ve had epoxy take a full week before it’s fully hardened for sanding. Hoping this doesn’t take that long…
Glad to see that inlay coming along. If I remember correctly, making the inlay on the other twin was endlessly tedious.
You remember correctly. I had a few sections fall apart on me as I was prepping the fingerboard, and needed some replacement shell material. Then, my supplier shipped out the replacement…to my old address in Minneapolis (from 2017!) instead of my address in San Diego. Then, the guy who lives there attempted to forward it to me, but not before COVID made everyone in his family sick and delaying shipment back to me by two weeks, plus five days of transit time.
The whole inlay situation took over six weeks before it all came together…but was worth it in the end. What a PITA!!!
Oh the red bursted maple burl top? Gonna finish that preamp wire-up the next couple days and it will be done. Pics to come…

I'm curious, did you not use the same templates from the first born?
Templates are all 100% identical between the two basses. I think one of the early posts in the thread shows them. The only differences between the instruments are:
1) The fingerboard inlay,
And
1) Use of the new scarf joint router sled I made (I wanted a more precise, and faster way to ensure a tight-fitting scarf).
Aside from those two elements, these basses are literally identical twin brothers, with all boards coming from the same exact lumber slabs and built off a common set of templates.

Okay, so it was the same template set. For some reason I thought you made a whole new template for this one.
All the exact same! Which reminds me, I do need to make up some new templates at some point - last year when I made the original set, I wasn’t able to get any HDF due to COVID chain supply shortages, and had to make the templates out of MDF instead. They get the job done, but I’ll probably update them by the time I do the next instrument.
