Winter Build Off 2025 - Get Ready!

Another vote here for the "I do what I want" club :

Roasted curly maple jazz neck
Alder precision body of 4.3 pounds
Johnnie Walker crate top wood
Vintage 60 hot p bass pickups
Telecaster control plate with two knobs
Category : assembly

The wood pieces are being worked as we speak so can’t go back.

Gemini design idea?

I always felt that having the guitar neck on top would be more ergonomic. I wear my basses significantly lower than I wear my guitars, as accurately fretting all those absurdly tiny strings can be tough on my wrist.

Never had the chance to actually test drive that though.

So…
Just gonna bet this specific question out of the way now. If I build two basses and use a pre-laminated neck blank for one build, am I entering as a scratch build? The other build would be a complete scratch build.

I need to find a way to build two basses and keep Mrs Xander happy.
Speaking only for myself, I'd call that a scratch build.

Your pre-laminated neck blank seems to fall foul of rule b. I don't see any rule (yet) that says one of your matching basses can't be a partial build and the other a scratch build.

Scratch Builds must be built from scratch using raw or dimensioned lumber.
a) Dimensioned lumber includes: Billets, 1-pce neck blanks, matched tops, stringers, thin laminates, veneers, fingerboards, pre-slotted/radiused fretboards, etc.
b) Scratch builds must not have any components glued up or cut out prior to the start.
c) Built components must have their build process pictorially included in the entry thread.
d) Minimum diameter for lowest pitch string is 0.083".

That would be all built by you, but partially built before the starting line, so that one is a partial, with or without pictures of the neck beam lamination process. And also means you can simply dive in if you so choose, and document the partial pile on opening day, wherever it stands.

Nothing wrong with a partial. IIRC we've had several scratch builds that became partial builds until they finally got done, because Life Happens ™

Sometimes they even end up as assembly builds!
