Double Bass Wintergrass in Bellevue 2010

Is anybody else planning to be there? Maiken and I will be going down on Friday and I've already heard from Jim Shamp.

I won't be making the trip to Wintergrass this year, though I wish I could. In 2006, I visited, as my son, Aaron, was playing bass for Randy Kohrs and I tagged along.

Aaron WILL be there, arriving on Friday, playing Saturday and Sunday with Mountain Heart. He's the mandolin man with them these days. He'll probably also play some dobro with them.

If you happen to be there, catch up and maybe see if you can pull him into a jam. He'll pick anything in a bluegrass setting except the fiddle. Steer clear of him participating on that instrument. If he does grab the fiddle, and attempt to play it, it's mostly for comedic effect.

Tell him that Big Mike D said to behave!

Dwight McCartney, if you are there, be sure and re-introduce yourself to Aaron and remind him that you shared your fine bass with him in 2006. He'll remember that!

I saw some funny out takes from what I believe was the Jim VanCleve fiddle DVD. Aaron was playing fiddle and it was very funny. I think he was also playing mandolin with the fiddle bow- they were clowning and it was pretty hilarious.

Well, the new venue is pretty nice but I really missed the street scene in Old Tacoma, especially the Tully's in the historic Bostwick Building. That triangular building is really cool - triangular in plan AND elevation, and with enough solid quarter-sawn Mahogany to build a pile of guitars. We had some great jams in the back room there...

Show-wise I only saw Crooked Still and The Jaybirds - The Jaybirds were fantastic!

We spent a lot of time picking with our favourite banjo player, Paul Sato from Hawaii - we only get to make music with him once a year so...
