they make string winders with cutters on the end, but it works just the same... what's wrong with wire cutters anyways??

Hey all,

I've found that wire cutters tend to flatten the end, slightly, as they cut the string. This may OK with some of you but I use an alternate method!

I've been a bicycle mechanic for many hears and I use bicycle cable cutters on my strings. The next time any of you are near a bike shop, stop in and ask the mechanic for a look at these. They work very well!!!

No teeth, PLEASE!!!!!

Second that one, ran a bike shop for 5 years. Still using my trusty old Park Cable Cutter for strings. Works great!!

I use a nail-clipper.
Cuts all guages of bass strings with ease. Although I can't use it for cutting nails anymore.

I hope not. Once the strings ruin the nail clipper, the clipper ruins your nails.

Seriously, just use wire cutters. The bike cable cutters sound cool, but to me it sounds like a bit of overkill. I guess I'd use them if I already had them, though.

Here's what I use. Knipex, German made quality, and worth every penny of their high price.

I've never noticed any flattening. Not that I was looking.

+1. One of my best tool investments was the Sears 5-pack of little pliers. Too bad I worked there at the time and it took nearly 3 hours of work to buy a $20 tool kit.

YES SIR! SIDING CUTTERS or SNIPS as they are known as. They look like a pair of mini hedge clippers. They cut through strings clean and quick with no problem.

Since winding bass strings properly usually means bending the end of the string 90 degrees and inserting it into the recess in the center of the tuner, what's the problem with flattening the end of the string slightly? Just clip 'em with diagonal cutters and move on with life.
