Wireless systems?

Move around quite a bit on stage and my 30ft cable like to get wrapped up on things (mainly my feet). Also with two other guitarists both having long cable and everyone using pedals and wanting them at the front of the stage, it gets pretty hectic and can be a tangled mess after a little bit.

I also just hate using a cable because I can step on it and pull myself off balance easily as it pulls my bass down.

Another thing I would like to do is have the freedom to make sure that the sound guy is doing his job (last gig he wasn't and I ended up having to quit playing and go set the mix myself).

Is a wireless system worth it? I haven't researched any models yet, so can I get some suggestions on cheaper models that will give me plenty of freedom?

cheap wireless systems are the worst thing ever. stay away.

look at the line 6 relay stuff; it isn't that much more, and being digital, you don't get the signal loss from companding. (love my G50.)

I use a wireless just for the reason you suggested.....to check on the FOH mix during sound checks. Useful also for setting up PA FOH and doing small bar / club gigs that don't have a sound engineer. I however have never used a wireless set up for excessive stage dancing or running through crowd. Wireless just another tool.

Oh, and if you have the $, get a multichannel. I have fond memories of a holiday party we played at the local casino's hotel and the guitar players wireless used the same frequency that the hotels PA system did. Needless to say, he couldn't use it for the show.

I don't use because.....
I have used one, the AKG bug, and it was fine almost all the time.
But, man, if I ever had level problems, I was never sure it wasn't the wireless.
And if your batteries die, even just once, you'll see a single-point-of-failure. You!!! But still....
Just too many OTHER things to worry about at a gig.
If you do get one, be sure you get one with the correct (and legal) frequencies. I "think" that there are some used sets floating around that aren't in the correct frequency range. I could be wrong about that. Search here in the forums to be sure.

Here's another vote for the Line6 stuff - I've been using an XDR-95 for a few years now, and it's been great... One of my guitarists, and a few other friends are using the newer G50s, and they're all very happy with them...

Once I went wireless, I'll be staying that way - it sounds exactly like my cable, without the limitations: I can cross the stage without getting tangled up, and can get out front to check things out thru the FOH...

The reason why those are selling so cheaply is that they're no longer FCC compliant - they operate in what are now "prohibited frequencies"... Even if you're not having an issue currently, that doesn't mean you won't have one in the future - I wouldn't advise someone to go that route...

I got to say, I've been pretty happy with my Shure SLX14. It's one of the new frequencies. I know it's not digital like the Line 6 models but I haven't really found any lower sound quality with the Shure. Very reliable. Uses AA batts. I've been using rechargables and I can go 2 shows without a recharge.
