Hi all. I'm about to build a kit bass and I'm picking up parts, and I'd like a little help first confirming my design intentions aren't totally off the deep end (only slightly).
Once I know that, I'd like a help choosing pickups to do this with.
My design goal is a bit weird. I definitely want to be able to get the ubiquitous P sound when I want it, but I love the way Rick players often sound, especially Chris Squier's sound and style in particular. It seems to me the electronics requirements don't conflict, and it isn't that much more expensive to add a third pickup since I'm building the thing anyway, so I want to try to put aspects of both into the same instrument. That should give me enough options that I can go a long time without getting GAS for electric basses (sax eats enough money as it is).
Anyway, here's the plan.
I'll have three pickups, each wired in parallel with its own concentric pot for independent volume and tone control. This should be the exact same thing as the classic top-shelf Fender jazz bass, just with a third pickup circuit, right?
Additionally, I will install switches to the neck and bridge pickups, allowing me to mix and match pickups between the two different channels of a stereo jack. If my thinking is correct that should be simple - simply switch the parallel circuits from right channel to left. This will give me the option to run two different effects setups or just record two totally different bass sounds, much like one can do with a Rick.
Is this sounding like it will work?
On to the pickups themselves. I've pretty much decided on the Fender Original Vintage P (Invalid Link Removed) for the middle pickup, which leaves me to ask, what do you think I should get for the bridge and neck pickups?
