Wisdom teeth extraction

So is there a possibility that you can have wisdom teeth and not be required to get them removed?

I wish so because I think I have something brewing behind my molars and I've already experienced the pains of several painful dental procedures :(

Of course!!!! If they don't hurt, aren't in the way of other teeth, you are able to clean your wisdom teeth so there are less chances of gum disease, align correctly then you keep them. The dentist will tell you.

I believe it sjust local anesthesia and only the bottom ones are surgery, upper ones are good ol pulling teeth, i might bring my mp3 player and listen to cliff's solo all procedure long lol

You'll become a fan of sedation dentistry after that. Seriously, I'd do the "twilight sleep" thing for wisdom teeth. You won't remember a thing.

If there is enough room for them yes, but they can still cause problem because of their location so far back in the mouth making them hard to clean properly:hmm:

Another consideration is this: unless your wisdom teeth are perfectly aligned, they will crowd your molars and grind against them, which is just asking for cavities. If let go for too long, in some cases the adjacent molar cannot be saved and must be removed as well.

My wife put off having hers removed and had the pleasure of 4 extra cavities filled following the removal :)

I have also heard of people having more or less than 4 wisdom teeth... and some people don't have any at all! how is that fair eh

don't sweat it makanudo, if you're reasonably conscientious you'll be fine. Just take it easy a couple days and be careful what you eat/don't drink through a straw/don't smoke etc. I have a friend who tells me he got a peanut stuck in one of his sockets... so maybe avoid peanuts? ;)

This probably goes without saying, but having a skilled/reputable oral surgeon for this helps a ton, even if it means shelling out some extra $ or waiting a bit longer for his schedule.

I have 3 wisdom teeth, they are all through.

the dentist wanted to remove them, and I asked him why he though I should have them removed because they don't hurt, are aligned properly and have not messed up my mouth and have no cavities.

he said just in case of complications down the road.

I politely told him, that in case of complication I will come see him for removal at that time.

I had the bottom ones surgically removed about a year ago, one tooth at a time and about six weeks in between the operations. Same situation, they were barely showing.

The operation was very quick and painless, it was about 20-25 minutes per tooth. They gave me some hefty painkillers to go, but honestly there was no need for any kind of pills as the wound itself wasn't actually hurting at all. The jaw bone was a bit sore for a day or two, but it was only noticeable when I opened my mouth so that wasn't a problem either. I did get a little bit of swelling with the first one, none with the second. They used dissolving stiching, but it took almost three weeks to dissolve so after the second operation I had the stiches removed some ten days later as the most incovenient thing about the whole operation was having those bits of half dissolved threads in my mouth.

So yeah, don't worry about it. It's really not a big deal. I actually disliked the pulling of the upper wisdom teeth more than the surgical removal. Pulling wasn't at all painful either, but I couldn't sleep for a day or two since I kept hearing the sound of ripping that tooth out in my head and getting shivers because of it..

I was completely out for mine, that's what I recommend :P
Huge +1 on this. I was awake with local anesthesia for my first two wisdom teeth coming out. One of the worst experiences of my life. You don't want to do this, unless you like the sound of saws, the cracking of your teeth being ripped out, and the taste of blood.
I got knocked out for the second two, and other than puking in the driveway when I got home, it wasn't that bad.

That's what I said.

Then I woke up on the first day of a two week vacation I'd planned before starting a new job with a swelling the size of a tennis ball sticking out of the side of my face. Was an abscess due to an impacted tooth. Instead of spending that time doing a lap of California as planned I ended up in bed in agony chewing on Vicodin.

Based on my experiences I'd advise getting them out before the complications arrive.

I had all four of mine removed 3 weeks ago. Three were pulled and the other (coming in perpendicular to the rest of my teeth, lol) was cut. The only difference now it that I got 2 holes in my gum and food keeps getting in there so every time I drink something I gotta shake it loose like Linsterine, lol.

The procedure was super smooth and I was kinda-sorta awake during, which was way cool. I couldn't feel pain or taste anything just felt a little poking, prooding, pulling and wiggling. I was done in under 45 minutes and it felt like I didn't have a lower jaw for a few hours after. The pain was only bad near the tooth that they had to cut the gum for. Everything else was fine within 3 days and for the funny tooth hole maybe a week and a half. The doc said the holes should be closed up completely within a few more months. As far as surgeries go, that was the one with the smallest "back-to-normal" time but then again I've only had 3 :p. Do it before it's too late, it won't kill ya :).
