Wisdom teeth extraction

Just got back from the dentist, wow i was expecting much more pain or something like that, it was actually kind of fun feeling how my mouth just numbed more and more haha.

6 more to go, next 2 in 5 days!

Well im getting surgery to remove my bottom wisom teeth, im not so worried about the upper ones because they are completely out.

However, the bottom ones are showing just barely and leaning forward so i have my doubts about the procedure and i would like to know wha tmy fellow bassists went through when they got theirs removed.

Would you be kind enough and share your experiences?

I've had impacted/expoded wisdom teeth. That, even with pain killer, is a tug. On the other hand, I had two more that were totally fine that just needed a pull. Nitrous and some Novacaine? EASY SLIDE. Doesn't hit you heavy, but sure as hell makes the process seem to move quick.

Hey thats good to know man.

I've got aquestion though, i've read that you shouldn't drink anything with a straw because you could pull the blood clot. Since im kinda hungry i just poured a V8 vegetable juice in a glass and im taking small sips out of it, is it okay or am i supposed to avoid sucking anything? (yeah i laughed too haha)

page 2: "After your surgery, avoid drinking through a straw and spitting for the first few days. Also don't rinse your mouth more than your dentist recommends. If you do rinse -- do so gently. Be sure to visit your dentist for all scheduled follow-up visits."

Wow, opinions & experience sure do vary on this.
Does anyone have any new takes on this from more recent experience?

I figure the tools to do the job may have improved since this thread was last active.
My dad had it done when I was a kid & went to work the next day. He came home around lunchtime sick to his stomach from swallowing blood all morning.

My mother told the dentist to sod off & has kept hers w/o any problems.

Our dentist advised it would be a good idea, but not necessary, saying food could get impacted there, because they're not even with the other teeth, recessed.
Being recessed like that makes me think it would be even more difficult to extract them & more painful.

I still have all 4 wisdom teeth. They're crooked and a couple are probably technically impacted. Every dentist I've been to has wanted to extract them. But when I press them on details, they admit I'm not showing any real problems and as long as I'm careful about brushing etc, they may never cause a problem.

Needless to say I'm OCD about dental hygiene. :)

If I ever have to get one or more removed, I want to be out.

I was maybe 14 or 15 when mine were cut out (hadn't crested the gums but were bound to cause issues). I spent about 48-72 hours in a Vicodin blur spitting blood in a bowl and replacing gauze on the couch watching tv of some sort.

You wo nt remember the surgery. You'll recall little of the recovery, if any. Don't stress. You're good.

Well, it finally got to a point where I need to have one removed. Wishing I'd had them all out when I was 15. The opportunity was there & the dentist even suggested it, but it was expensive!
I'd forgotten what a big deal it is & the dentist today talked about it like it was a simple thing, no warnings about how you can't use a straw or any of that.
I guess that will be on a long list of instructions I get AFTER the extraction.

I hope this has healed up by now.

Don't kill yourself with worry over this---it's really no big deal. I had all 4 of mine done when I was 19. The first day was a bit sore, but the next day I was back playing softball. Five years ago, I had a cracked molar yanked the day before opening day of hunting season (which I wasn't going to miss because of a toothache).

Dentists today have a lot more finesse when it comes to extractions than they did years ago. You'll be fine.
