I am not sure I agree with the assessment though, about the JBarden PUP being the only hum-canceling one available - James, want to chine in on this topic? I do believe there are others, although probably not too many.
MJL told me the JBarten pup ran about $146, if I am remembering correctly. It's not a cheap pup, but is probably worth it.The jbarden isn't the only hum canceller in a J package, but it's the only twin blade one I can recall seeing. I have side-by-side noise cancellers from seymour duncan and delano in a pair of wishbasses. There are also stacked noise cancellers, but these, as well as most of the side-by-side models have pole pieces. depending on the string spacing it may or not make a difference...
...on my 3 stringer, the side-by-side ones don't work because the A string lands right over the top of the noise cancelling zone, and ends up being about 15dB or so quieter than the other two. I had to go back to the emg select for the time being but would still like to upgrade.
What does the barden run pricewise?
See? That's what I am talking about! The Stude looks positively edible, doesn't it? Personally, I think MJL is being too harsh on himself when he talks about his "krappy" finish job - it looked sweet indeed to me. (Hmm, I never did ask about the additional tone control, now that I think about it ...)

Thanks for the great photos MJL, and you are probably correct - we probably did jam together at church back in the day, but of course it would have been with me playing drums. Now it's going to bug me trying to remember when! Oh, and I ordered a set of those strings yesterday, too.
Ciao for now ....
I was specifically looking for a hum canceling jazz-bass style pick-up. Which I discovered that many companies make j-bass PUPs that are out of fase (or reverse wired) with eachother --thus hum canceling but they only work in tandem and not by themselves. And so the first pickup I bought for this bass was a Basslines QuaterPounder J-Bass PUP: only to discover that it was only hum-canceling when used with a second (out of fase) PUP. The Joe Bardens were the only ones I found that were hum canceling by themselves... and still touted the classic J-Bass sound. I think the twin blades negate the need for the second pickup as the blades are out of fase with eachother... (at least thats what I think I remember reading about them)... But there may be others out there...
LexTron6K; We feel for you, man. I have had exactly the opposite experience however. Have you emailed or called? (I assume you have.) Wish has ALWAYS gotten back to me ASAP with any email I have sent (and I ask some pretty dumb questions!). Makes me wonder when he fits in actually working on his instruments. Anyone out there have a similar experience?Has anybody ever had Wish forget to make a bass for them? Or, has anybody ever had to remind Wish that they placed an order with him?
Oh boy. The impatience is over and the paranoia is kicking in. . .
What did you do about the issue of these pups being open on the sides and not having the mounting screw offsets? Would it make sense to use the J style pup from his noiseless PJ set since those have the same moulded case like the EMGs? what do you think of that idea? Thanks ...I have installed Stan Hinesley Split J Noiseless pickups in several Wishbasses and love the tone....(and completely hum-free)

Stan will sell them individually (not as a set) if requested.

Keep the faith!
Here is a diagram from the Bartolini site. They use two blades to get the cancellation. I have a 4 string and a 5 string Bart, both with the same outer dimensions, that work quite well. For the 5 string one blade is longer to cover 3 of the strings. The jbarden isn't the only hum canceller in a J package, but it's the only twin blade one I can recall seeing. Tone is so subjective. I love em. Very much like a Jazz pu, but....... different. If you go to youtube, and search jbybj, you will find my WB demo's. The Purpleheart Hyper, #943 is the 4 string Bartolini, and the 5 string fretted Scroll, #866, is the other one. The playing part come towards the end of the video, if you want to jump ahead.I like that setup... how's the tone on this pickup?
