Double Bass Wizzy 112 vs. Wizzy M-Line 12"

Hey Everybody,

In my recent search for a new extension cabinet for my Contra I've been hearing a lot of buzz about the Wizzy cabs. I am interested in these pretty much solely for upright...the occasional electric gig isn't much of a concern to me.

Here is my question. What is the difference between the regular 112 and the M-line. I read about them both and know the M-line has the side vents and is 5 pounds heavier, but for an upright rig which tends to work better. Anybody have preferences, and is the price difference significant? Thanks!

I'm sure that others will chime in here, but since I'm visiting the threads at the moment, here's what I know. The Wizzy M Line is a Transmission line cabinet, that functions in a similar manner to the Bose Wave music system. That allows the cabinet to reproduce lower frequencies. If you'll notice the side of the M Line it has it's port to the side as well. I beileve the M designation referes to the path (shape) of the wave guide inside the cabinet.

I own a Wizzy 112 and a Wizzy M, and I like them both very much. However if I could only keep one, it would be the Wizzy M. The difference in sound is somewhat subtle, but the Wizzy M has a more extended low end and the mids are more refined**. Both cabs are truly outstanding designs IMO and deliver an amazing amount of sound from a compact and lightweight package. They are also exceptionally efficient and have one of the highest sensitivity ratings of any small cab on the market (103 dB SPL w/ 1W @1M) That along with the 4 ohm impedance helps get the most out of low and medium power amps. If there actually is a difference in weight between these cabs, it is too small for me to notice when I pick them up. The Wizzy M is the more expensive version, however I don't know what the current street prices are.

**Technically speaking, both cabs use the same 12-inch driver, and both use transmission lines. The Wizzy M has a longer, more complex transmission line design than the Wizzy 112. The longer TL results in a more extended low frequency response. The side vents on the Wizzy M are the openings for the transmission line. (On the Wizzy 112, the TL opening is in front.)

Much like what Rob, Tom and Joe all said, I happen to like both versions of the Wizzy cabinets too. I am totally comfortable using either one on any of my gigs ... which are for the most part, er ... sort of unremarkable. I am a local part-time gigger. Gigs are 90% straightahead jazz on upright, remainder on fretted and fretless EB.
