I think it is 'a bit'...over the top, don't you think? Why the hell so many strings??? Is it because you miss something elsewhere..?

Is this discussion to you? If you meant it as ironic you have my apologies of course, otherwise lets just leave it there, and if you classify my last post as plain shooting I'm sorry too, but please understand my frustration in seeing my thread turn to dust. :eyebrow: Oh, and is the word "crazy" supposed to mean "this sucks"? maybe its because I'm not a native speaker :rollno:

closed as far as I care.

sorry it got derailed man. Honestly, I think they are cool (ERB's) and have heard some very interesting things played on them. If that is the direction your playing/style is taking you, more power to you. :bassist:

But just keep in mind that strings will be more expensive and harder to track down and you will definitely need a subwoofer with ultra low response. Also, there will be people who won't accept your instrument or it's range, but don't let that stop you from getting something you feel strongly about.

The bass isn't going to be his. Al Caldwell is having it built, who's been playing 9-string basses for some time, so strings and subwoofers are no new thing to him.

I think it has potential to be absolutely awesome.

For now I'm going to stop at 7 and just stare blankly at anything more than that. My girlish hands just can't handle much more.

Al is a crazy man. A very talented man, but crazy nontheless.

For the record: I don't think that the low B or the high C of 5/6 strings will ever catch on. It just doesn't seem like they're practical. 5+ basses are just for wankers. Link Removed

Even I believe that I would like to at least try an 8 strung from F# to F, I have doubts if I would (if possible) ever go 9 for example, but that doesn't mean I don't appreciate the achievement these instruments are, I'm looking from the point of where years ago if you ordered a thing like this you'd get "it cant be done", well it is, and way beyond the expectations of some!Doesn't this mean that luthierie is just getting better and better, with evergrowing resources at our hand? When I got my Gt-7 my maestro told me that "the tension is unbearable and the neck wouldn't stand it, you won't have a bass in one year" Like, the bass is about 3 years old!!??and there are 8 and 9, 10, 11 stringed basses in perfect condition out there? If they are playable instruments that only means that some luthiers are doing things the right way, and that benefits all future basses.

I don't get it. 11 strings. Does it really happen that one sits down with say an eight string or a nine string or a ten string even - plays the highest note and thinks to himself.....No!! I really need an extra string :eyebrow:
For those of you who don't know me I'm a student of Anthony Jackson, the inventor of the Smith/Jackson 6. I am a bassist first and foremost. I play 28 diffrent instruments and I am following in the foot steps of John Turner , Stew , Greg, Garry Goodman , Jean and many other ERB pioneers that came before me. When I played my 9 string bass with the St.Louis Symphony, they laughed at first but when they realized that it was easier to read my chart in 2 positions and because of the sound of the bass ,we were all pleased. ( I hope :-) Music is infinite. Creativity is Infinite. This is an ideal that i'm willing to pay for. I had Conklin make me the first midi 9. That concept worked. I have large hands so this Bass/midi Guitar should be fine. I hope you like the music that I create with this dream bass of mine. As for bassist who believe that 4 strings are more than enough......I wonder what could we do better than the creative souls who opened the door to our minds with 4 strings. They opened the door.......they didn't close it.

Hey man, I was just teasing, sorry for that. Off course one can do a lot more with an 11 string bass than a five, even I can think of that. ;)

Crazy/ Funny/ Mad...etc.. I know what you meant by it, don't worry. ;)

hey all,

just, as usual, chiming in with my unsolicited opinion.

I don't think ERB's are for everyone any more than 4 strings are for everyone.

if you haven't heard Al play, do yourself a favor and check out his music: the man is a monster with the most wonderful melodic bent! even his heavy funk is lyrical!

from the lows,

Stew
