Kibble, milkbones, and P Basses. And redheads.
Under-rated? They were huge in the early '80s.
Every video was a high dollar/big production...they were like mini-James Bond episodes.
They were one of the headliners for Live Aid...and they rocked, too (in spite of Lebon's "dance moves").
I imagine egos (& probably drugs, too) tarnished this momentum.
...and then they veered more into sampling, less about live playing.
IIRC, a JT interview in Bass Player mentioned how the non-musicians in DD were making the musical choices.
Who in their right state of mind would take the bass out of JT's hands/mind for a synth/compooter?
Under-rated as musicians. They were teen idols, and they played to that, but the music on the early albums was quite good. Boyz to Men were huge. Milli Vanilli was, for a time. Menudo was huge. Get my point now?

JT thought Bernard Edwards walked on water, and Nile Rogers loves them. I don't need any more props than that.
Easy to overlook them from the fashion/video impact, but (like others) smartly used that as an intro to new fans, who hopefully would hear the work going on 'under the hood'. 'Rio' is a handful to play faithfully, but I love his contrapuntal lines under 'Say a Prayer'. Another band where guys seem to not like bands who seem to be having fun, not dreaded, dopey, or depressed enough. Count me as a big DD fan.

I didn't look at Teen magazines from that time...
That said, a decade earlier, my friend's sister had Teen Beat, 16, whatever...The Doors were in those magazines. Alice Cooper (the group) were in those magazines...and I didn't like it. Not one damn bit.

I am not a fan of Maiden/Metallica...so I don't know a whole lot except Steve Harris had the "galloping" (a beat subdivided into 1ea 1/8th note followed by 2ea 1/16th notes) octave thing down. John Taylor used that technique, too.
John Taylor is awesome, the song "notorious" was one of the first I learned to slap. I struggle with a lot of his fast transitions from fingers to slap and cheat pretty often.
Thanks for posting this! I must admit that I never paid much attention to the bass line in "Rio," but it sure has my attention now!
Unfortunately, the producer kind of buried it for some reason. Maybe it stole the show..
Realky? I had (still have) the LP from back in the day. I thought the bass was pretty out front...like a lot of the other '80s New Wave/Pop bands (The Fixx, Naked Eyes, ABC, Kajagoogoo, Madness, Haircut 100, etc).
