BTW, I always find that when the low end is crowded, I've got to simplify my pulse. Gotta be the kind of player the situation calls for.
An example I just thought of is a cover song we do by Tom Petty (can't recall the name at the moment). In the actual recording there's a melodic bass passage in the beginning and after the bridge. In our recordings the keyboardist begins to mimick me then harmonizes it. And, because of the mix, you actually don't even HEAR the bass...at least on tape. I'm pretty sure it's the same through the mains.
