Wood Cost?

Hi, I usually just lurk around here but I've been itching to build a bass myself and being a 15 year old, I'm on a semi-tight budget. I was wondering prices of wood blanks for everything. I've been looking around and I can't really find prices for anything. So whats the cheapest blanks come, I assume rosewood fretboard, alder body and maple neck? :) Thanks.

I can't believe I made it through that with proper grammar. :\

well, if your buying pre-planed and everything, its gonna run you a bit. on lmii, the alder blank is 80, the neck is around 30, and the FB is around like 17, so in total, without tax or shipping, your looking at around 130 some odd dollars

You dont need to spend that much - over in the UK, buying north American timber from my local mill, you could get enough poplar for a body for £4, maple for a neck would be no more than £8, planed two faces. Then buying from Dave Dykes the fingerboard would be £8 for grade A.

The whole lot would be £18 + vat, or £20.70 inc vat, which google tells me is about $30US.

Its got to be cheaper buying in the US!

I dont know anyone in the wodshop department, nor have i been down there... its kind of weird... my whole city is...weird.... i really hate going anywhere unusual in the school, its creepy...

I hope I can get wood that cheap,or close, otherwise it just might end my hopes to build one for now.

I think you will find that the wood for your bass will be the least expensive thing you buy for it. Hardware and electronics is where the money goes. A couple of years ago I built a bass and used all killer looking wood from Larry Davis (Myrtle burl, Black Limba, ebony and Bubinga) and I still spent a lot more for the rest of the stuff. It's almost always cheaper to buy the guitar than to build one. Plus building is a horrible addiction!!!
