wooden bridge insanity (help designing)

i thought that seemed a little odd, especially since fender style bridges use very similar saddles. one thing i should point out is that the guy was talking about a very light string guage (.021 i think)
that still seems wierd. I would think as long as you have some room to run the string aften the saddle, you should be fine.
I mean, cmon, upright basses, and (some) accoustics have been doing it forever.

I like Dennis Havlena's approach to it- he's got a customisable wooden electric bass bridge.
This is truely an awful, terrible design. I really hope that nobody follows suit.

the height-adjustment method was stolen from Dingwall.
I always thought the Dingwall height adjustment was classy and simple and effective, and the parts would be easy to replace.
Call me old fashioned, but I like Carl Thompson's approach:
Not as adjustable, granted, but still, as simple as it gets...
Pasda Beer's approach certainly rocks, though!

Carl Thompson also makes wooden bridges that are a bit more complicated.
Here's an example on a guitar. They are beautiful but pretty complicated. All the saddles are dovetailed into the slots so they don't fall out. This bridge still offers the awesomeness of a wooden bridge but makes it more adjustable.

cool design except intonation. Unless you intonate it befor eyou put the screws in and never use a different brand/model of strings this is not a great design... but it does give me an idea for a really great design

but individual saddles need to float or else you will only be able to intonate 2 strings (unless you get lucky)

He's a guy on a budget, like me. I like it because it's pretty much the only one I could ever afford to make.
welll, if you combined zolkos design and the induvidual ones, you might be able to come up with something decent.
You could make a much better bridge on even less of a budget with some good woodworking ability. Cheap doesn't mean it has to be bad.
You could make a wooden replica of an ABM bridge for very little money, for example, with full functionality.

I can attest to EMG's not needing to be grounded to the bridge at all, with out issue or at least i've done it, with no problem. Just couldn't say about any others though.

IMHO its a very nice, slick design very well carried out.
I bet the intonation is just as good as most of the basses i've encountered over the years.
I don't think that wooden bridges are out of interesting nowadays so forgive me for resurrecting this thread, this is my version with stainless steel saddles moving back and forward for intonation tuning AND switching from 34 to 35 inches scale (maybe 34 and a half). the shape of the saddles prevents the friction of the string also. Feel free to suggest anything instead or if it's something wrong. Sounds great by the way with no wizzy sound
