Michael Lang, one of the producers, had something quite impressive to say at the time of the 40th anniversary. He said during that summer he travelled around to most of the music festivals prior to Woodstock & noticed a considerable amount of conflict & violence in many cases. He was of the impression that this was "set up" to happen due to the attempt at enforcing rules & regulations & DEFENDING the imposed "borders" (including audience sensibilities) that the organizers felt they had to control. This was later quite apparent at Altamont, as an example.
The decision to make Woodstock a "free concert" & allow attendance of non-ticket holders & not attempt to regulate behaviour of such a vast audience, made that control a redundant issue & this knowledge relaxed the "mentality" of the crowd. This, after all, was the state of mind that this event was intended to be about - PEACE, LOVE, & MUSIC

Didn't experience any of the ripping off. I'm sure there was some, how could there not be?

If you want a show with terrible drug problems, (rip offs, fakes, Hells Angels beating people up, etc), I'd have to give a vote to Sedalia, MO festival in 74. Good music by great bands, but the temps were crazy, 100+ every day, they ran out of water, ice and food. The local grocer let 4 people at a time in the store, and each person could buy 1 thing. You could get in the long assed line and go again, but the wait was hours. A big refrigerated truck came in and sold bags of ice, I can't remember but I it was either $10 or $15 a regular sized bag, and one to a customer.

Just completely bad planning and poor management. Good music though.

Santana's "Soul Sacrifice" at Woodstock is such a talked about performance that I wanted to post a link which I came across & is viewable @ 720p HD (better sound also). Thanks "D.M.N." for post #5 which provides some added pics in the "full length" version.
