Hey.

First. Is that what you call yourselves?

Maybe I mean cabinet maker.

Oh well. I need to know what kind of joint is most likely used in a well-constructed amp head housing. Like an SVT for instance!

And, if different, what is the ideal joint (strengthwise and lookwise) for such an application?

The head box I want to have built will house an approx. 15 lb. amp.

Hi King,

Fifteen pounds isn't much to accommodate structurally. On the cheap, some might just use glued and stapled, nailed, biscuited, or screwed butt joints, or perhaps pocket screws.

I'd probably use a glued dado/rabbet joint, a dado, or sliding dovetails.

If I were going to keep the wood exposed and finish it, through or half-blind dovetails would be overkill structurally, but would look terrific.

The handle is more likely to fail with repeated use than good joinery: pick a good one.

Like Jazzdog says, it depends what you are doing for a finish. If you are using veneer/paint/carpet then I would use screwed and glued butt joints. If you are going to use hardwood and apply a stain then I would use a different joint that will look nicer.

I agree, you wont need anything too major. I would recommend a hard material too. I wouldn't use wood, unless you just want it to look pretty. Go get yourself a sheet of 3/4" MDO plywood. You will probably only need half a sheet (famous last words) but most stores only sell it in 4x8's. I think Lowe's sells it in smaller scraps for the DIY'er. As for joints, either butt joints or rabbit joints should be fine. Just use plenty of wood or gorilla glue. I would like to see your plans for construction, so I can get a better idea of what exactly you are planning to build. Oh yea, wear your safety glasses lol.
