Working definition of "guitard"

OK, I'm a noob, but I see the word "guitard" thrown around here a lot, generally seeming to be used for a guitar player with more ego than talent or musical knowledge, but I don't think I've actually seen the word defined. I thought I'd take a whack, though.

guitard- noun- 1) Guy who drops eleven hundred on a Fender Strat, decides that isn't enough guitar for him, and drops another twelve hundred on a Gibson SG (which he takes out of the case maybe twice), instead of buying an entry-level instrument and using the rest of the money to pay for, you know, lessons.

2) Guy who drops some ungodly amount of money on a vintage Gibson Flying V, instead of buying an entry-level instrument and using the rest of the money to pay for, you know, lessons.

'Cause if you have an awesome guitar and a chord book, you don't need lessons because the awesomeness of the guitar will inspire you to awesomeness of playing.

3)Guy who laughs and sneers when the bass player asks him to turn down because he has a Traynor combo/Fender tube amp and all she has is a little Gorilla practice amp and can't hear herself, even though she's standing less than three feet from her amp.

Really. I was in a band with these two guys. I only showed up for practice because I liked jamming with the drummer (who was nineteen- the rest of us were in our late twenties- and far and away the best musician in the band). I think I was in the pocket, but I'm not really sure because, like I said, I couldn't hear myself.

Guitard: Interchangeable with Drumtard, basstard, keytard etc.
Should mean any musician that puts down other musicians.

Musician: A person who plays music through the use of a musical instrument or percussion instrument that respects his fellow musicians.

JustDavid- doesn't necessarily have to be a guy, I just generally run into a lot more guys with guitars slung over their shoulders than chicks.

And, actually, the awesomest musicians I've met generally are the nicest ones.

Ego and talent generally seem to be inversely proportional.

I don't know they have to be a "guy".
Depending on where you live, "guy" is gender neutral, see also "Dude".

5) Someone who is certain that, if they are playing with the exact same equipment, with all the knobs set exactly as they were in picture/ in video/at concert X of <insert favorite artist here>, then said player must automatically play as well as target guitar hero.

my daughter works with mentally challenged children. i would never think of refering to them as dufus. i however have no problem assigning a brutal label to someone who is completely selfcentered, without reason, and offensive in their very nature. so you can call anyone any less "offensive" name you like. fact of the matter is that life can be rough for aholes as it should be, how else will they learn to not be aholes. i should know, i was once a major ahole, and am thankful for the reality checks i got from true friends along the way.

But it's about the person not the fact that they play guitar.
Rather than be offensive to the music world in general just call the guy an Ahole

I know a few guitards that think that because Im a bassist I dont need wah or distortion. they say "How many bassists use wah and distortion" I say "Cliff Burton, Geezer Butler, etc". I dont need it but love it :)

Um, Ric5, I think you're straying into offensiveness territory, there. You're suggesting that mentally challenged people should be referred to as retards, and that the definition of "guitard" is "mentally challenged person who plays guitar".

From what I've seen in my short time on the boards, "guitard" (or "basstard", for that matter) seems to be applied mostly to people whose self-assessment of their talent and/or coolness is far greater than their actual talent and/or coolness.

Oh, and I did know a guy once who sank a chunk of change into a Fender Mustang (lipstick red, gorgeous little guitar) when he had never had a lesson in his life. Thing is, though, the dude had freakin' talent. He didn't know any scales or chords, but he could pick up a guitar and make great music come out of it somehow, just based on ear and intuition.

Shoulda formed a band with him, I guess.
