Worlds First Drum Machine in Pedal Form!

FWIW I just e-mailed them because of my moving situation. As I've said before, I'm moving in less than two weeks, so I contacted them. They seemed optimistic I should just ship to my current address, but that was in mid-June. So I'm trying to nail them down on that. I will report back what I find out, if appropriate.

I got a response from Eli this morning:

"We're testing the pilot production in every way we can right now. So far, everything we've come across has had an easy fix, but we're still doing thorough testing. If there are absolutely no last-minute issues to fix, we will be shipping the pedal out in late July.
The manager software, online library, and community forums will be available before we ship, though we cannot give an exact date yet.
Thank you for your patience, the BeatBuddy is almost here!"

I just got a response from Eli. I don't want to post the whole thing here, but it was similar to the response above. Basically, they are operating as though they are extremely close. They're doing lots of pilot production runs and intensive testing before proceeding with the mass production run. It may not happen in July, but we're really, really close as long as something major and unexpected doesn't come up.

You guys champing at the bit can have the preproduction units. I'll take a fully fettled one in Aug/Sept.

Not sure what you're getting at. Eli told me that they might send out the final pre-production run---i.e., the one that will be tested and identical to the mass production run---to the earliest supporters. So there won't be any difference.

Unless you are just speaking hypothetically to make a point, in which case, nevermind.

I'd like to think both will be the same give or take 2-3 firmware upgrades. I don't think the boxes will be different. But some of the good folks here have been waiting a long time for this and did not give up (unlike me, I sorta suck in that department) I'm hopping they get something good soon. And report positive feedback!

For those of you NOT on the e-mail list, here's an update. It has my name because I'm copying it right from my e-mail. It doesn't look like this was posted on their Indiegogo page.

Hi Adam,

We’ve been in China for the past 3 weeks working on the production process and it has been an incredible experience. It is truly a whole new world here with huge numbers of massive skyscrapers being built everywhere. The pace of change is breathtaking and exciting. And the food is… interesting (we got pretty sick for a while).

We completed a limited manufacturing run 2 weeks ago and have been vigorously testing these BeatBuddys to make sure they stand up to our long-term quality standards. The good news is that they came out looking beautiful and work perfectly! The bad news is that after extensive use the switch underneath the pedal is coming loose (we’ve pressed each pedal over 10,000 times -- by hand, or rather, by foot! -- to simulate a real world environment). We’ve realized that while our original method of securing the switch to the metal case may have been fine for a regular guitar pedal where it is just pressed a few times per song (such as turning distortion on or off), it is not sufficient for the heavy use we expect you guys to put the BeatBuddy through. Luckily, there's a simple solution to fix this issue and achieve a completely rock-solid connection, but this requires a slight change in the mold, which will add 2 to 3 weeks to the delivery time (see the pictures below for more details), so we now expect to begin shipping in mid to late August. We will be air shipping your unit to you, so you should receive it no later than a week after shipment.

We were hoping there would be another solution, but this turns out to be the most solid way to fix it. While we want the BeatBuddy to be delivered as soon as possible, too, we think everyone would rather wait an extra couple weeks and have a BeatBuddy that will last them many more years.

We're very sorry about this delay, but luckily it's looking like it'll certainly be the last one. Thank you for sticking with us thus far. We're right at the end of the manufacturing process and your BeatBuddy will be delivered before you know it!

Left: The current design, using the two tabs to keep the switch stable as a single nut on the outside fastens the switch to the case.
Right: The new design that add a stabilizing 'shoulder', the bump that fits in the groove of the switch to keep the switch from turning as the nuts are tightened, and removes the two side tabs to allow an additional nut to fasten the switch on the inside of the case.

The nut that attaches the switch on the outside of the case. Note the groove in the switch that will fit in the 'shoulder' of the new design.

In other news, Goran has completed recording all the drum samples and MIDI beats! He is now fine-tuning everything in the BeatBuddy Manager software so it all plays back perfectly and ultra-realistically. He is a bit of an obsessive-compulsive perfectionist, so he might be the only person in the world kinda glad for this delay. Now he gets to go over every detail a thousand more times :-) Once he is fully satisfied, we will release the content and the BeatBuddy Manager software for you guys to download so you can play with your own virtual BeatBuddy while you wait for the physical one to arrive. We are also completing the forum so you guys can share the content you create with the rest of the BeatBuddy community. We will send out an update when this is ready.

How a BeatBuddy gets made:

First we start with bars of Aluminum Metal:

Which we use to make the metal case with our mold:

Which is placed in the metal stamping machine to stamp out cases using high heat and pressure:

The cases are painted and dried in another high heat machine:

Then all ink markings are stamped on them:

Which gives us a set of beautiful cases:

To which we attach the rubber pad to the pedal and bottom of the case:

Part 2 (Talkbass didn't like that many photos):

The PCB electronic boards are made in the PCB factory, who have a policy against photography (their manufacturing techniques are trade secrets) so we were only able to snap these photos.

The PCB manufacturing line:

The finished PCB boards:

Now we are ready to begin final assembly! We gather all the other components, such as:

LCD screens

Encoders for the knobs:

Headphone jacks:

And we begin attaching them to the PCB boards. Starting with the MIDI Sync port:

The we install all the components into the case and screw in the audio jacks:

Moving on to mechanical tests, such as with the vibrating machine:

And ending with musical tests by professional studio musicians to make sure everything sounds great:

Thanks again for your support and patience. We’re in the final stages of bringing the BeatBuddy to the world!

Keep rockin’,
The BeatBuddy Team

I got that email today as well. I, for one, appreciate the updates and as was mentioned earlier, I'd much rather wait a few extra weeks so they can get it dialed in right.

I've got PLENTY of stuff to work on until my BB gets here(3 Strymon pedals, 2 Source Audio pedals+ the Hub AND the HH3, and the Disaster Area DPC-5. Not to mention the GR-55 that'll be here next week), so a slight delay works for me. And it'll make it feel like a birthday present!

Same boat but with different cargo! (Would much rather wait for a great product then settle for a good one; and my birthday is next month too!)

I agree with all this. As unhappy as I am that we've got to wait at least another month (late August/early September) beyond the most recent estimated delivery date (July), as long as it goes to a better product and the goal is on the horizon, I can live with it. I think the Beat Buddy team deserves a lot of credit for this update, it's all very transparent and entertaining as well. I think it's also very encouraging just to see a physical product, not that I didn't believe we were going to get it, but it should help dispel some of the notions of vaporware that some people might have had (and others might be worried about the longer this goes on).

I've been keeping an eye on this thread as a technology enthusiast and I gotta say I've never really seen an update from a manufacturer like this. It's incredibly impressive and shows a level of care (and obsessiveness) that most people just don't have. I'm not a big drum machine guy, but I love the concept of an entire computer formed and housed in a small high quality pedal. If I had purchased a pre-order, I would absolutely think they made the right decision by delaying the shipping; rather than making the improvements as a second-gen release.

Yeah, I'd say David and his team have definitely done the right things in order to keep the backers in the loop and keep the doubter drama to a minimum. I applaud them for that. Seeing an actual "finished" product has, on one hand, brought the excitement and anticipation levels up. On the other hand, It's also made the delays more bearable because we can see they actually have a product to tweak, not just a "hey, we're having some problems and it's gonna take us longer than we'd hoped. We'll let you know" with nothing to show.

If this is how they're gonna run their customer service dept, the Beat Buddy team is gonna be very successful!

Hey guys, thank you all for your super nice comments and understanding. It's greatly appreciated!!!

Sorry I've been MIA from this thread for a while... been pretty swamped taking care of a million little details to get everything just right :-)

And I know you guys are waiting on the software, but we've been adding some additional features and taking care of some minor bugs (as well as perfecting the content)... so I'd rather release a more complete product than having a half finished thing floating around. It's coming soon!
