At around where the 27th fret(less) spot would be: They are adjustable truss rods (which can be tweaked with strings at full tension) - - - But I've NEVER had to go there - - - And I rarely go there when I'm playing ;-)

Hayashi-san is the 'H. Noble' designer on the great Aria Pro II guitars and basses from the 80's when he worked for Matsumoku. He then left to form his own business, Atlansia. In a wonderful, Oriental way, this stuff pegs the weird-o-meter, but if you look closesly there are some wonderful outside-the-box ideas at work.

Jens Ritter is for me the most concise blend of a completely different design language combined with the technical know-how to make it all work. After the woodworking and finish work of great variation, he builds his own pickups (not a lot of triplebuckers out there with Rare Earth magnets and not a Bart or EMG anywhere), tone networks, and terrific hardware built to his specs by ETS. Like Alembic, one of the few to build virtually the entire instrument. Scroll through this website, and past the shapes, the finishes are just totally outstanding and completely from a different esthetic.

Not cheap, but then, there's nothing cheap involved with these instruments. If you've never seen these, prepare yourself.
