Worship Bass Pedalboards

Well fellas I took the new MXR bass synth to church this morning and had planned on using it on Honey in the Rock. My rig there consists of tuner/la1a/Broughton sbm/hx stomp/lowrider/capo. Pulled off the sbm and placed it there, tested during warm up and good to go. Began Honey in the Rock and cracked a smile, here we go, looked down and tapped the switch. Engage light didn’t come on. No sweat maybe I didn’t hit it right. Tried again. Nothing. Again nothing. Argh what’s going?! Preset light is on as well as shape. No idea so hit my stomp octaver preset and back in business with the super low end.

End of service and checked it out. Pushed switch multiple times and still nothing. Turn the board over to check power cables and notice the dc7 port I’m using is set to 18v. Panic ensues! Forgot to even check that. Grabbed the whole board to take home and test. Lord please tell me I didn’t fry it! Got it home set to 9v and plugged in and tested. Works like a charm! Whew!

Glad that wasn’t a costly mistake. Not sure why it worked when I first tested at church but so glad I didn’t fry it. Carry on gents.

And since you have the HX One you can have a clean boost there or effects with boosts to compensate for the volume loss. I have a chorus with volume boost for example that I use when I turn off the AGS.

I still have the same setup and the only thing I'm looking to change is the DCX. I really like it, but I need something a bit wilder. But also that I can tame. That may be a hard one to find. :)
I think the Stomp may be in the classifieds soon if anyone is interested. I gave it a good shot, but it's hard to give up a few of my analog pedals.
I listed the Sub25 as well.
At the moment, nothing is catching my eye as far as effects go. That will change soon though, I'm sure. Most of my gear browsing has been drum related, so that helped with the pedal GAS. Well, I guess it just 'shifted' the GAS towards other things.

Really keen to try the MXR Bass Synth, but none in Australia and there won't be for a while. The reality is - I like my BMS, and I am not trying to get anything else on the board. On my analog board I have a Digitech BSW which I enjoy, so no massive need to get rid of either.

Whilst reading about peoples experiences with the Bass Synth, I stumbled across someone talking about the Behringer Toro. Looks really cool and I can get this and a keyboard for the same price as the MXR Bass Synth.

The Behringer Toro is a completely different application, but color me intrigued. Are the many here who have used the Toro?

I believe the Toro is a clone of the Moog Minitaur or a straight copy of the Taurus. I don't have direct experience with the Toro but my guess is that it will be reproduce the sound of the original well (based on how they did a great job with the model D) and that's a great synth bass sound.

So if you want a synth sound and don't mind always bringing your keyboard and Toro, that will most likely be the best sound. If you want to always have the possibility of using a synth like sound in your pedalboard, then the MXR may be best :)

As usual the answer is... get both :D

We had a brand new system installed about a year and a half ago. Over that time, the sound crew has been learning the board. The bass tone has always been acceptable, but not very clear. It's always been loud in the mix, though, which is nice. I never really said anything since there were 1000 other things to work out, and I could work around it. When I got to the sanctuary on Sunday, the WL said he wiped out all the processing on the bass channel and wanted to start over. At first, it was a bit too bright, but I rolled back the tone knob a little and it was just right. No need for extreme compression and over the top EQ. For the first time, I could really hear the subtle differences in my pedals in the sanctuary. I always thought that I was losing a lot of the subtleties, but yesterday it was like a blanket was lifted from my tone. He did the same for the Moog and now the filter sweeps are much more fun!
I ended up bringing the Greer Southland in the DCX spot. The combo of the Lightspeed and the Southland covers a lot of ground. I'm going to roll with this for a little bit.

That is so cool. I've cycled through many pedals because at home I could tweak and sculpt only to have the sounds washed out through FOH.

There’s a quote from a big time CCM bass player - Jesse Reeves I think - that isn’t up on YouTube any more, but basically it was him showing his gear. Tuner to amp to FOH. Basically said that no matter what you do, it sounds like bass in the house. Wish I could find the video.

That's exactly what was happening. Even the Moog filter sweep used to be puny. Stuff still gets lost in the room, but now it's easy to differentiate my low drive from my heavy drive.
The other thing that it helped was my in ear mix. The mid range allowed me to hear the bass without having to boost it so high.

I spent last week at Bethel and I noticed that they had an Orange amp on stage. First I thought it was a monitor but then I realized it was mic’ed and then I hear the mixing engineer say they blend it in for FOH. So that’s a factor for the sound apart from the pedalboard we usually see.

I just started watching the YouTube stream from the Bethel conference. The bass tones are just so well sculpted. The whole thing is just excellent.

They are great. I’m somewhere there jumping around lol

The livestream audio engineer is a former Bethel keys player and the mix is great.

Also, I went a bit skeptical about the whole “spontaneous” thing and left very sold. It’s truly spontaneous and impressive from both a musical and spiritual POV. In that video there’s a couple instances where Elle, who’s amazing but doesn’t play with Bethel often, tries to pull a couple but it doesn’t fully land.

The bass players played a couple of jazz basses exclusively.
